Former Catalina High School coach Obie Tannwill return to coaching leading Sabino’s boys basketball program.
Tann, who coached the Trojans from 2016-19, will take over as the Sabercats’ coach after Marty Rothleft for Mica Mountain and then subsequently the Southern Arizona Volunteers.
Sabino hired former Tucson coach Daryl Jonesto replace Roth, who led the Sabercats to the Class 3A state championship game in February, but Jones joined Roth to help coach the Volunteers.

Tann made headlines in his native Chicago in 2018 when he took Catalina there to play in a holiday tournament. He was 38-44 in his three years with the Trojans, including 32-24 in his final two seasons.
“I’m super excited to take over such a great program,” Tann said of coaching Sabino. “Last year, they got close to the ultimate goal. It’s our job to go and try to compete for it again.”
Tann said his year off from coaching last year was spent mostly helping to take care of his second son in as many years. He also moved to Arkansas to help operate Elite Arkansas Training.
“I focused on family,” he said. “I trained players from fifth grade to professional level. We have the largest privately owned training facility in Northeast Arkansas.
“My Business partner Jay Harris, one of the best skill develop trainers in the world, and I hope to open an Elite Arizona Training In the very near future. But right now, we our going to once again try and bring some Chicago toughness to the Old Pueblo.
