Sunnyside freshman ace pitcher Tatyana Vegahad three hits (including a home run and a double) and six RBIs and she struck out eight batters in the Blue Devils’ win Saturday in five innings over host Gilbert in the 5A state playoff first-round game.
The No. 9 Blue Devils (22-9) will play at No. 1 seed Surprise Willow Canyon (28-2) in the next round Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Sunnyside leadoff hitter Natalya Riverawent 3 for 3 with three runs and an RBI in the win over Gilbert.
Lauryn Carbajalalso went 3 for 4 with two runs for the Blue Devils, who have won 11 of their last 12 games.

Jorgina Gantstruck out seven batters in 5 1/3 innings and Ariana Camenand Camilia Zepedaeach had three hits to lead the Badgers’ 11-hit attack in a 6A state playoffs first-round game.
Zepeda, who hit a home run, finished with three RBIs. Julissa Lopezalso went 1 for 2 with two RBIs.
No. 2-seeded Tucson (25-3-1) next plays No. 7 Basha (19-9) on Wednesday at home at 4 p.m.

Catalina Foothills (22-7) next hosts No. 6 Cactus Shadows (19-5-1) on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Cactus Shadows defeated No. 11 Cienega 10-0 in five innings Saturday.

The Bobcats were limited to three hits by Cactus Shadows’ Bailey Day, who had two strikeouts and two walks in the 5A first-round game.
Cienega finished its season with a 17-13 record.

Mares also went 2 for 3 with a triple as part of the Lancers’ nine-hit attack.

Julia Holtand Destanee Nezcombined on a two-hitter and Naya Camposfinished with four RBIs including a home run in the 4A first-round playoff game.
Holt, who belted a three-run triple, pitched the first inning before Nez worked the rest of the way in the circle. Nez struck out seven batters with only one walk in her four innings.
Isabella Beauchampwent 2 for 2 with a run and RBI and Zaedi Tagaloghit a triple and scored a run.
The No. 3 Dorados (30-3) next host No. 6 Sahuarita (26-5-1) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Freshman Brenna Figueroascattered four hits in seven innings with three strikeouts and only one walk in the Mustangs’ 4A first-round playoff game.
Mallory Wrobelhit a two-run double with one out in the first inning to give Sahuarita a 2-0 lead.
The third run of the inning scored on an error and Sahuarita tacked on another run in the sixth on a passed ball.
No. 5 Coconino 6, No. 12 Pueblo 1
Pueblo’s Belen Camachostruck out nine and walked only one in her six innings but the Warriors came up short in the 4A first-round game.
Freshman Anesa Castillowent 2 for 2 for the Warriors, who finished the season 13-11.

No. 18 Tanque Verde 18, No. 15 Kingman 1
Tanque Verde’s Jessica Thompsonstruck out 14 with only one walk and she scattered four hits in seven innings and she went 5 for 5 with two doubles and five runs in the 3A playoff play-in game at Kingman.
The Hawks tallied 19 hits with three players, including Thompson, compiling at least four hits.
Leadoff batter Kaityln McLaughlinwent 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs and Hannah Haggardfinished 4 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs.
Natalie Striblinghad two hits including a double and drove in four runs.
The No. 18 Hawks (14-12) next play at No. 3 Page (20-8) in a first-round game Tuesday at 4 p.m.
