The daily grind can cause all kinds of skin irritation. Here's how to soothe your mug -- even if the world's burning around you.

Four angry pimples are peppering my face right now. It's been years since I've broken out like this. But I'm stressed. And thanks to the current state of the world, there's a very good chance you are, too. Which means you might also be having skin issues. The culprit? Biology. "When we're stressed, our adrenal glands increase output of the stress hormone cortisol," says dermatologist Dendy Engelman. That's fine if you're a caveman running from a hungry bear. But if you're a modern man working at a job that keeps your cortisol level high for days, weeks, or months, it brings about inflammation inside your body and outside on your skin.

The havoc this wreaks can range from oily skin and premature aging -- a high cortisol level can result in wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and sagging, says Engelman -- to those painful, deep-rooted pimples. The solution is to walk the line between treating symptoms and addressing the underlying inflammation. Too many active ingredients can make things worse, so use only what you really need to target the issue you're tackling, and bookend your treatments with a gentle cleanser and an even gentler moisturizer. The right products make de-stressing your skin simple. If only the same could be said about the world outside your bathroom.

1. PAULA'S CHOICE 10% AZELAIC ACID BOOSTER ($38)
Pimples are one thing, but those dark spots that can stick around after they're gone are another hassle entirely. Unlike other spot treatments, azelaic acid helps clear pores *and* prevent dark marks. "It's especially great for deeper skin tones, which tend to hyperpigment," advises Engelman.

2. SKINCEUTICALS A.G.E. INTERRUPTER ($162)
Chronic stress can kick-start a process called glycosylation, during which sugar attaches to the proteins in your skin, leading to a sallow tone and speeding up collagen breakdown. This cream helps fight that process to keep skin looking supple.

3. DR. DENNIS GROSS STRESS RESCUE SUPER SERUM ($74)
Designed to reduce redness, dullness, and fine lines, this contains niacinamide and adaptogens, anti-inflammatory ingredients that balance your skin. Use it morning and night after washing your face, then seal it in with a moisturizer.

4. BIOSSANCE SQUALANE + PROBIOTIC GEL MOISTURIZER ($52)
There's a lot of hydration packed into this lightweight gel, and it also has probiotics to help fortify your skin's protective barrier and red algae to help calm visible signs of stress like redness. Since it's so light and gentle, its suitable for all skin types, even oily skin.

5. LA ROCHE-POSAY EFFACLAR DUO DUAL ACTION ACNE TREATMENT ($20)
As far as pimple-zapping ingredients go, benzoyl peroxide is a workhorse. "Dermatologists really believe in it because it's very effective in spot treatments and it has a lot of safety data," says Engelman. Use this gel whenever you see or feel a pimple popping up and get rid of it fast.
