A majority of radon in air mitigation or radon mitigation systems installations generally are some form of an Active Soil Depressurization (ASD) approach which is usually the easiest to maintainand economical to operate.This approach uses a special fan to create a vacuum under the lowest level of a home, drain tiles or the lower walls to remove the radon gas by creating a lower pressure away from the structure and extracting the gas before it enters the home.In homes that have lower levels covered by a concrete floor, all large cracks and open joints are sealed to protect vacuum losses.In homes that have soil floors, a sealed membrane must be installed in order to create the vacuum below it.Both approaches use PVC piping to divert the extracted gas above the roof line so radon reentry in the home is eliminated.When multiple lower floor levels exist, additional extraction points may be necessary depending on the physical connection of the levels.

The main issue of concern is the aesthetic impact on a home when retrofitting a mitigation system to an existing structure.Different exterior pipe material can be used or exterior pipe routing can be adjusted to make it less conspicuous.In some cases, piping can be routed internally through a home using an attached garage or closet space if adequate clearances are available.
