Ken Uston was a professional gambler with a love of blackjack. Born in New York in 1935, his mother a native of Austria and his father a Japanese migrant businessman. Uston went to Yale University at the age of 16, then studies an MBA at Harvard. He had varied jobs including Senior Vice President at the Pacific Stock Exchange. He enjoyed playing blackjack at weekends and read Thorp's Beat the Dealer becoming a genius card-counter. In 1983 Blackjack Forum interviewed Uston. He said he became fascinated by blackjack and its strategies after meeting professional gambler Al Francesco in a poker game. Francesco had launched the first ''big player'' type of blackjack card counting team and recruited Uston to be his main team player. A team of card counters would wait until a table became extremely positive and the ''big player'' would place big bets. Uston was promoted as the ''big player''. He later co-authored a book called The Big Player which effectively ba

If a gambler had two tattoos - one on each shoulder - the pessimist would probably suggest a devil while the optimist would have their sights on an angel, both whispering words of wisdom. ''Keep that ace up your sleeve''. There are so many forms of gambling: horseracing, the stock market, lottery, casino... You name it. The big question for many is where to bet. That's where Codeta Casino come into play. Assessing whether gambling is a good idea relates to one major factor: whether you are a winner or a loser. That point varies from one person to the next. Because even though many puritans suggest that gambling is an offensive word, there are many punters who make their betting pay. The first time I went to a casino made of bricks and mortar was at the Grosvenor Casino Great Yarmouth. To be honest, it was a brilliant evening. I managed to win a few quid in the process. I would recommend the experience to anyone. As long as you bet what you can affor

The luck of the devil. Tell's face it, to win at the casino you need a bit of luck. I have played the tables online and you can place one here if you fancy a flutter. I've not been to many brick and mortar casinos. Visited a few here and there: Great Yarmouth, Nottingham & Luton. I've won money at all bar Nottingham. I don't think I lost much there, perhaps forty or fifty pounds. They are all owned by Grosvenor who have many across the country. Readers will know I go to Great Yarmouth quite regular. This coastal town is like most - beyond the glitz of the Golden Mile is a community who are largely deprived. Seasonal work doesn't help but people live where they live. I love Yarmouth because I have fond memories of school holidays at Caister-on-sea. Who hasn't been to Regent Street for a wander? There is plenty of things to do. Sadly the old House Of Wax closed a few years back. It was featured in a few big publications as being something of a com

Underage gamblers beware. A New York man hit the headlines winning an undisclosed slot machine jackpot whilst playing at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem in Pennsylvania. However, things turned sour when he forfeited his winnings and was then charged with underage gambling. Most US states prohibit players under 21. Needless to say, Pennsylvania law requires a person to be over 21 to gamble in casinos, much to the annoyance of Rong Lin of Fresh Meadows, New York, who was aged just 20. Mr Lin tried to get past the state laws by using fake identification to enter the casino, playing the slots. Although the amount of his winnings have not been revealed, if it had been less than $1,200 he would likely have been able to collect the money and leave without much fuss. However, above that threshold a casino worker is automatically summoned to deal with an Internal Revenue Service form related to paying taxes on winnings, and a player must provide identification during th

A number of factors can influence our decision to sign up with a new online casino. A wide choice of slot games, the ability to play different versions of roulette and the presence of live dealers: These are all important aspects to take into account but for most of us, it’s the size of the welcome bonus that really drags us in. From the Ancient Greeks to this modern day, gambling as a form of entertainment is hugely popular. What is your favourite bet? Craps, roulette, baccarat, blackjack, slots, poker... Did you know the first European gambling house was called the Ridetto (Italian for The private Room), in the wing of the San Moise Palace. It was established in Venice, Italy, in 1638 by the Great Council, which controlled gambling during the carnival season. Although it was open to all, due to the high stakes and formal dress code only nobles could afford to play at the casino's tables. A bizarre dress code stipulated gamblers needed to be anonymous wearing a three-cornered hat and mask in order to play. The modern-day casino become big business across the world. Significant sites include Monte Carlo, Monaco, enjoyed by well-off visitors. In fact it has been featured in a film and song named The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo. Few countries come close to the U
