Speedyfix looks as though it really would appreciate another furlong. Volcanic Dust should either lead or at least track the leaders. However, I don't think it can go fast enough to either burn off the others or get many outpaced, so I doubt if it can win the race. Daneglow slow time over course and distance usually tracks the leaders but I don't think he will be good enough. Marmot Bay will either try to lead or track the leaders. His time over course and distance doesn't inspire me to think he can win. Robyn has only produced slow times over course and distance. This one could try any tactics for the race so not sure what it will do but I'm doubtful. Rightcar is quite capable of winning a race but maybe not over this distance: he needs a sixth furlong but will track the leaders. Chateau Lola has the third fastest time on my ratings and at course and distance must have a chance racing prominently. Ishetoo has got the top rating but that is over the course but at 6f. It's never won on

Evens Stevens hasn't run on the course before but has done a decent time at Southwell but I'm not convinced it can give weight away to the rest. Trinityelitedotcom looks like being the favourite but only comes out 4th of the 6 runners on my ratings. It's likely to track the leaders but I don't think it will be able to catch them. Caspian Prince is 2nd rated by me but that rating did come at Kempton so not 100% convinced but if it takes to the slower surface could have a chance. Diamond Charlie comes out top and at this course and distance. Another hold up or track leaders type. Tax Free hasn't run on the course and is also likely to want to track the leaders. I'm not sure if it will like the course but I never say no with this horse, he's not as good as he used to be and not as consistent and now runs in lower class races but when he wants he can be a live contender. Nafa may not be good enough to win this class. It comes out 4th on my ratings and another that likes to

A Maiden race over 7f 32y on standard going. Eleven three-year-olds compete with half a dozen colts taking on the fillies. Karl Burke is a class trainer who not only knows his horses but places them well. Jaeger Train, a bay gelding from Captain Rio out of a multi-winning mare, was expected to take a small maiden auction stakes over this course on debut when racing over 6f. Market Avenue Racing Club Ltd have never been afraid to get stuck when backing their horses and this 25,000euro purchase by Spigot Lodge (Burke) was a little too ring rusty to catch the eventual winner. This step up in distance and experience should afford a strong performance today. The tissue price suggests this youngster will start favourite. However, this gelding has very good win and place claims.

An EBF Maiden Stakes over 7f 32y on standard going. Nine two-year-olds take part, predominantly colts against three fillies, most raced. A difficult race to assess with the majority of the field showing limited ability, or needing to put poor runs behind them, with the exception of one form horse who has struggled to win. Clever Miss, trained by Alan McCabe, is worth a second glance. This stable know the time of day and it was significant this daughter of Mount Nelson was backed on debut at Redcar over 6f. A relatively cheap yearling purchase at 12,000gns, it was telling the money came for her that day, especially considering it was a stiff contest for the race type. Speaking on RUK, McCabe stated they held this bay filly in some regard and expected a bold show. Inexperience saw her outpaced mid race but she ran on in determined style to finish fourth, on the tails of a couple of fair sorts in Augusta Ada and Spiceupyourlife. I've little doubt connections were disappointed by that pe

An EBF Maiden Stakes over 5f 216y on this turning course. Twelve two-year-olds take part, predominantly raced, with a couple of fillies opposing a field of colts. The betting suggests there are three main contenders all who have shown ability. Saeed Bin Suroor trains two of the leading lights, racing in the familiar royal blue silks of Godolphin. Wickhambrook was made favourite on his debut when showing little ability behind the talented Extortionist. This chestnut son of Dubawi was fancied when making his return over 6f at York. That looked a strong race and it was noticeable how much his jockey [William Buick] coasted to the line in fourth when victory was lost. This juvenile may have been slightly disadvantaged running nearer the stands' rail although he is a lively sort with good pace. A wide draw could well test both rider and horse. It will be interesting to see whether De Sousa tries to get to the rail because that is very much the gamble for those considering a wager.

A Maiden Auction Fillies' Stakes over 5f 20y. A restricted race with just six runners, four raced. In general, this race type is on a par with plating class and significance usually points to horses with form, especially of merit. Blockade is a daughter of Kheleyf who cost £12,000 at the yearling sales. She is owned by Saeed Manana and trained by James Tate who has impressed since starting his career a couple of years back. This brown filly was sent off a 66/1 shot when second string for a Newmarket maiden. The form of this race has been franked a number of times. Blockade finished a creditable sixth, losing by less than four lengths. Six winners have come from this race and there will be more to come. That data in itself makes this horse hard to beat. Her second start showed a similar level of form and a willing attitude. The other form horses, each once raced, have much to prove compared to the favourite. However, it is worth remembering that two-year-olds often improve

An EBF Maiden Stakes over 5f 20y. Five runners: three colts, two fillies, one with race experience. Two horses make most appeal in this contest. David Griffiths has a few juveniles in training but generally they are limited. However, Lilo Lil, a daughter of Captain Gerrard who cost £2,000, seemingly ran a blinder on her second start after finishing tailed-off on debut. It proves the point that horses can be transformed from that initial start. She ran much better at Redcar just over a week ago when backed from 40/1 - 33/1. Considering she was carrying two pounds over weight that was a gritty display. After showing good pace I had expected her to drop out of contention but none of it - she battled. The winner won a shade comfortably and has been spoken with enthusiasm by trainer Michael Dods. With a couple of outsiders filling the frame it could be poor race. There are pointers to form but even restricted races can prove quality events and only time will tell if this form is stro

A Maiden Auction Stakes over 5f 20y. Quite a restricted race with eight runners, three raced, a couple showing form. David Evans doesn't let the grass grow under his or his horses feet and that is especially true of his two-year-olds. His approach to the juvenile season is simple: to have his youngsters primed to run and for the majority of the string to have raced by June. Statistically, his winner will come within this period. Ty-Derlwyn Farm have two representatives for this contest. Kodafine, a daughter of Kodiac out of a winning mare, could well start this race at prohibitive odds. This brown filly looks a canny yearling purchase at 10,000euros & part owned by the trainer. She ran a storming race on debut at Kempton and by all accounts was unlucky not to have won. A tardy start set a stiff task but this compact filly ran on with enthusiasm & given a considerate ride by her jockey. Another day that would have been a winning debut. In many ways that Kempton race

Foley Steels E.B.F Maiden Fillies' Stakes over 5f 20y. Nine two-year-olds take part, with two form horses who will feature prominently in the betting. Ron Harris has made a superb start to the juvenile campaign with M'Selle winning in some style at Lingfield. Clearly that filly gave them a good line to their string because Go Glamorous was fancied in the betting at Kempton. This daughter of Elnadin cost 20,000euros at the yearling sales. By all accounts she looked every inch a winner on debut, only to be caught on the line. A number of horses showed varied signs of inexperience. The first four home were most professional. It is difficult to assess the form although another of today's runners - Marilyn Marquessa - finished a creditable fourth and was substantially backed on debut when seeming to disappoint. Marilyn Marquessa ran well at Kempton, leading for most, before tiring in the closing stages. On that running you would have to consider Go Glamorous holds the advanta

A Maiden Auction Stakes over 5f 20y on standard going. Seven two-year-olds take part, a mix of colts and fillies from early-season trainers. This looks a tricky race to assess with only one horse with experience. Bill Turner got off to his customary flying start when Mick's Yer Man won the Brocklesby in style on the first day of the Flat turf season. His second runner didn't keep the 100% record, although that colt ran on with purpose at the line. Jake Payne takes the ride on Sunshine Superman, a son of Captain Gerrard, who was purchased by the trainer for £1,100 at the yearling sales. The mare was unraced, although bred to need a trip. As stated before, Turner doesn't feature as good a strike rate with his debutantes as pundits enthuse. In fact, their juveniles often struggle to win first start. The Brocklesby victory is still fresh in punters' minds and could well be a horse to take a watching brief if a short price. Outback Lover is the only horse to have raced so fa

A Maiden Stakes over 5f 20y. Eight horses take part, including one debutante. By all accounts this looks out of three horses with the rest of the field unlikely winners. Top Boy, trained by Derek Shaw, is a bonny gelding. This son of Exceed And Excel always caught the eye and he is a good-looking bay. Shaw purchased this horse as a yearling from Tattersalls for 42,000gns. Although a 14/1 shot on debut, he was held in some regard by connection but fluffed his lines that day trailing home last. He went close to winning second start when making impressive headway in the final furlong. In nine races to date he has had a number of stiff tasks at pattern class including the Coventry Stakes (Group 2) & Richmond Stakes (Group 2). The form of the latter race at Goodwood would make these horses look pretty ordinary opposition. At his best Top Boy is a talented horse who should win a race of this nature. Perhaps some would question why he has struggled to find victory, which in many ways is

Maiden Auction Stakes over 7f 32y round this turning track. An eleven-strong field of raced juveniles bar an intriguing debutante from the William Haggis' stable, racing in the silks of Cheveley Park Stud. The tissue betting would suggest only a handful are of interest with the majority pretty moderate horses based on recent form. Storma Norma, a daughter of Royal Applause, has been kept busy this season with seven runs and placed on a number of occasions. Tim Easterby has applied the hood first time. It will be interesting to see how she fares on the all-weather surface after showing her best form on testing ground on the turf. In such a poor race, well drawn, and off a handy weight, she has claims and could well hit the frame although after so many attempts there is probably one or two who are more talented. William Jarvis is a trainer I have a lot of time for because he places his horses to win and does particularly well on the artificial surfaces. Jodie's Gem is a gel

A Median Auction Maiden Stakes over 1m 141y. Eleven juveniles take part: just four colts against a flirt of fillies. Sicur was a relatively expensive yearling at 87,000gns and clearly held in some regard. This bay colt made his debut at Newmarket and, unusually for the stable, he was sent off 3/1 after being backed from over double those odds. Since that start, he has been placed on two further starts and damn unlucky not to have won with a short head second at Doncaster and then a quarter-length loss at Nottingham behind Sir Henry Cecil's Autun. Luca Cumani and Patrick Hills have proven a strong team this season and connections - Scuderia Rencati Srl - will be expecting a big run. By all accounts this is a drop in class and he must go very well. This son of Dylan Thomas will take all the beating.

3:30 Southwell John Jenkins is a canny trainer and I always take note of his two-year-olds at Southwell. In recent years he has proven a rich seam of gold taking these restricted auction races over the minimum trip. Oscar's Journey, a son of Dubai Destination, showed ability on his first two starts. This gelding ran with credit on his first two starts and fancied to go well when making a return to Yarmouth but ran no race. In this poor race I expect a big run. A good each way bet at 4/1+. 5:40 Wolverhampton If anyone has read our well received article: ''I Followed That Horse Over A Cliff'' Then my next, tentative, selection could well be followed by a quick read to recap the error of my ways. However, Hats Off has always been a horse on my radar. A good-looking gelding, the wheels seemed to fall off this son of Royal Applause after a respectable introduction. I have little doubt this youngster has been held in some regard. In fact, I know it from the trainer's mouth. There m

A Maiden Stakes over 5f 20y. Nine two-year-olds take part in this intriguing race. Six colts, three fillies, the majority raced. Bapak Bangsawan has been a busy boy for Kevin Ryan running five time so far. This son of Pastoral Pursuits is a home bred with bristling pace. There is a lot to like about his last two efforts, when returning to the minimum trip. This May foal was only collard in the closing stages at Southwell by a decent filly and similarly when taking his chance at York. It was surprising to see this bay colt touch huge odds-on in-running because although he held every chance he never quite ran away from the field. By all accounts he could well be defined at a short runner. However, turning courses are often easier than straight five furlongs and from a low draw Bapak Bangsawan may just about last home. This youngster could well be a good back to lay if following those bold front-running tactics. At times, making such assumptions can be a costly exercise because it

An A.B.F Maiden Auction Stakes over 5f 216y. The majority of the field have raced with three debutantes. Backers of Therapeutic will probably need to have the Betty Ford Clinic on speed dial for a session of Deep Sleep Therapy if Scott Dixon's bay filly doesn't - finally - gain success. This daughter of Milk It Mick showed a fair level of form in her first two starts but the last two efforts have left many scratching their heads. Fancied to go well, she was beaten by a better horse at Musselburgh, tiring after a full-on attack to win, where this home bred finished fourth. Well backed at Catterick, De Sousa made a bold effort to lead all the way in testing conditions but clearly went a stride too fast. The testing ground on both recent starts may have not been ideal and connection try the all-weather and step up in distance. It would be no surprise to see her held up with a view to finishing the race although if taking a front-running approach De Sousa will need to have learned a valu

A fillies' maiden auction over this turning 5f. A field of eight two-year-olds, a couple with prior experience. All juveniles here are cheap purchases, most from unfashionable stables, featuring a poor strike rate on debut. Poetic Princess will go off favourite. This daughter of Byron has turned two and ran with encouragement on debut at Kempton, a rag priced 25/1. A small bay filly who will probably be at her best early season, belied her odds finishing third behind Woodland Mill. Tony Culhane made a bright start from the stalls but soon settled just off the lead, if not a touch outpaced. In the closing stages she rallied with enthusiasm. It was noticeable that her jockey was at pains to give her a considerate introduction, a hands and heels ride. On sparse form, the one to beat. From the same race, Dreamy Ciara was left trailing some lengths behind. This daughter of Multiplex is a big filly. She will certainly dwarf the favourite. A wide draw didn't do her any favours, however, she
