CHIANG RAI– Police in Chiang Rai have arrested two 14-year-old boys after they crashed their motorcycle while attempting to smuggle nearly 30 kilograms of crystal meth through a local checkpoint.
The incident occurred on April 30, 2026, at approximately 3:00 PM in the Mae Chan district. Authorities recovered a massive stash of crystal methamphetamine and ketamine from the youths, exposing a troubling strategy used by regional drug cartels to exploit minors for transporting narcotics.
Officers from the Mae Chan Police Station were actively conducting a routine anti-drug operation at a checkpoint in Ban Wiang Sa, located in the Sri Kham subdistrict. Under the direction of Police Colonel Kiatisak Jitprasarn, the local police team was carefully monitoring highway traffic to stop the illegal transport of drugs through the northern province.
During the busy afternoon shift, police officers noticed a suspicious motorcycle carrying two young men. Right behind them, a second motorcycle approached. The driver of the second bike had a large black bag wedged firmly between his legs and appeared visibly anxious as he neared the officers.
As soon as the riders on the second motorcycle spotted the police checkpoint ahead, they panicked. They aggressively swerved their bike in an attempt to turn around and flee the scene. However, moving at a fast pace with a heavy load, they quickly lost control of the vehicle. The motorcycle violently skidded and crashed into the side of the road, allowing police officers to immediately rush in and secure both suspects.
What Chiang Rai Police Found in the Bag
The two detained suspects were identified by authorities only by their nicknames, “Toon” and “Kla.” Both boys are just 14 years old. When police unzipped the large black bag they had been trying to transport, they discovered a highly organized and heavily packaged shipment of illegal narcotics.
The seized contraband from the crime scene included:
- Crystal Methamphetamine (Ice):24 tightly sealed bags weighing a total of 25.8 kilograms.
- Ketamine:4 separate bags weighing roughly 4.1 kilograms.
- Total Haul:Approximately 29.9 kilograms of illegal substances destined for the black market.

Investigators strongly believe these two individuals were acting as advance scouts to clear the route and warn the drug runners of any police presence.
Local police have already gathered partial information about the escaped suspects. A rapid investigation is currently underway to track them down and bring them to justice. Authorities are also working backward to trace the exact origin of the drugs, hoping to dismantle the larger trafficking network that hired these children.
