LAMPANG – A 64-year-old woman died Wednesday evening after her vehicle erupted in flames at a local cemetery in the Muang Pan district. Authorities responded to the scene at the Ban Pa Heo cemetery in the Ban Kho sub-district around dusk on April 22, 2026. Local police and medical examiners identified the victim as Mrs. Khamma Wongpanya, a resident of the nearby Thung Bom village. Family members reported that she had been struggling with depression before the incident occurred.
According to reports from Manager Online , the victim left her home at approximately 4:30 p.m., driving a gray Isuzu pickup truck. Her daughter, identified as 46-year-old Mrs. Supattra, became concerned and began searching for her mother shortly after her departure.
Witnesses in the area reported hearing a loud explosion coming from the cemetery grounds. Neighbors rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire, but the flames grew too quickly to control. Emergency responders found the vehicle completely engulfed in flames near the local crematorium.
Lampang Police and Medical Investigation
Muang Pan police officers and a duty physician from Muang Pan Hospital conducted an initial autopsy at the scene. Forensic experts were also called to examine the vehicle to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
“The deceased had been suffering from depression,” Mrs. Supattra told investigators. She explained that the family believes the fire was intentionally set, and they do not suspect any foul play or outside involvement in the death.
Key findings from the preliminary investigation include:
- The fire started while the vehicle was parked in the middle of the cemetery.
- Residents reported a “deafening” sound similar to an explosion.
- Firefighters and locals were unable to reach the victim in time due to the intensity of the heat.
- The victim was found in the driver’s seat after the fire was extinguished.
Local Reactions and Supernatural Claims
The incident has left the local community in shock. Following the tragedy, some witnesses and residents shared accounts of seeing a mysterious “face” or figure in the driver’s seat as the smoke cleared. These claims quickly spread among the locals, adding a layer of eerie speculation to the tragic event. However, officials have focused their investigation on the mechanical and forensic evidence.
This tragedy highlights the ongoing challenges of mental health and depression within local communities. Health experts emphasize that depression is a medical condition that requires professional support and intervention.
If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, help is available. In Thailand, the Department of Mental Health provides resources and a 24-hour hotline at 1323 for those in need of counseling or support.
The Muang Pan Police Department is continuing its collaboration with forensic science officials to finalize the case. While the family has expressed that they do not wish to contest the cause of death, police must follow standard legal procedures to document the incident fully.
“We are working with the forensic team to gather all necessary evidence,” a spokesperson for the Muang Pan police stated. The vehicle will undergo further inspection to rule out any mechanical failures, though the primary lead remains a self-inflicted incident related to the victim’s health condition. The body has been released to the family for traditional funeral rites in their home village of Thung Bom.
