Artificial intelligence is no longer just a plot device in science fiction movies or a tool reserved for computer programmers. It is in our phones, our hospitals, our farms, and our schools. It writes emails, helps doctors diagnose illnesses, and even predicts the weather for rice farmers.
But as AI becomes a normal part of daily life, a new gap is forming. It is not just about who has access to the internet anymore. It is about who actually knows how to use these powerful new tools safely, smartly, and creatively.
Thailand has recognized this shift. Over the past few months, the country has seen a massive surge in national programs designed to teach ordinary people how to understand and use artificial intelligence. From the government’s high-level ministries to the country’s biggest telecom providers, a united front is forming. The goal is simple: ensure that no Thai citizen is left behind in the global digital economy.
This is not about turning everyone into a software engineer. Instead, it is about building a foundation of “AI literacy.” Just as we learn to read and write, the new generation needs to learn how to talk to machines, ask the right questions, and, most importantly, spot when a machine is getting it wrong.
The Blueprint: Thailand’s National Master AI Plan
To understand the sudden boom in tech education, you have to look at the country’s official playbook. Back in 2022, the government approved the National AI Strategy and Action Plan (2022–2027) .
This master plan was built to prepare the country’s infrastructure, laws, and workforce for the AI boom. The numbers attached to this plan are ambitious. By 2027, the government wants to:
- Create a direct economic and social impact of at least 48 billion Baht.
- Develop more than 30,000 highly trained AI experts and talents.
- Ensure that at least 600,000 ordinary citizens have a strong awareness of AI laws, ethics, and basic usage.
- See at least 600 government agencies and private companies actively using AI innovations.
The strategy makes one thing very clear: buying foreign technology is not enough. For Thailand to escape the middle-income trap and become a true regional leader, it has to create its own technology. Moving from a country that simply uses apps to a country that builds them requires human brainpower. That is exactly why public and private partnerships are currently taking center stage in the education sector.
Removing Barriers: True and Google’s Smart Move
One of the biggest roadblocks to learning anything online is the cost of data. You cannot stream a video course on machine learning if you are worried about your phone bill.
To solve this, True Corporation recently teamed up with Google to launch a massive educational campaign aimed directly at the youth. They created two core programs: the “Gemini Academy for Students” and the “AI Literacy & Safety Module.”
What makes this initiative stand out is the clever way they removed the financial barrier. True and dtac are offering their customers unlimited, free internet access specifically to complete these courses.
The classes cover the basics. Students learn what artificial intelligence actually is, how to use Google’s Gemini system to help with homework or creative projects, and the essential rules of digital ethics.
Sharad Mehrotra, True Corporation’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, summed up the mission perfectly. He noted that AI is completely changing how people live and work. Because of this, Thai youth need to do more than just open an app. They need to understand the gears turning behind the screen, use the technology responsibly, and stay safe online.
When a student finishes the training, they do not just walk away with new skills. They get a joint certificate from True and Google, giving them a tangible asset to show future schools or employers.
Turning Screen Time into Skills: AIS and Chulalongkorn
Not to be outdone, Thailand’s other telecom giant, AIS, has launched its own massive educational push. Partnering with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI) and the prestigious Chulalongkorn University, they introduced a program called “Aunjai Cyber: AI Literacy.”
This is an expansion of an older, highly successful digital safety campaign. But while the old campaign focused on basic internet safety, this new one is all about artificial intelligence. The program is often referred to affectionately as “My AI Buddy.”
The course was built by real university professors and tech experts. It is completely free and available to anyone through the Thai MOOC platform, the LearnDi for Thais website, and the Aunjai CYBER app.
The reach they are aiming for is staggering. The government hopes this curriculum will reach over 1.8 million individuals.
Here is what makes the AIS and Chulalongkorn partnership so revolutionary: it is not just a casual online video. The content has been strictly certified by MHESI. Even better, they are working on a system where the hours you spend learning online can actually be converted into real academic credits for university degrees later on.
This fits perfectly into the government’s vision of a “Lifelong Learning” system. You do not have to be an 18-year-old college freshman to benefit. Whether you are a 40-year-old factory manager looking to automate your inventory or a high school student learning to code, the door is wide open.
The Battle Against Fake News: Meta and Chiang Mai University
While learning to use chatbots is great for productivity, there is a dark side to the technology boom. Deepfakes, AI-generated scams, and fake news are flooding social media. It is becoming incredibly difficult to tell what is real and what was created by a computer.
This is exactly why Meta (the parent company of Facebook and Instagram) partnered with Chiang Mai University (CMU) . Together, they rolled out a free AI literacy course with a very specific, crucial focus: critical thinking.
The course is called “Keeping Pace with AI for Modern Life.” Meta realized that handing people powerful tools without teaching them how to spot danger is a recipe for disaster. This specific curriculum focuses heavily on building a “mental immune system.”
Students in the CMU program learn how to:

Rebuilding the Classroom: Microsoft’s Massive Rollout
While telcos and social media companies are focusing heavily on the general public, other tech giants are aiming straight at the heart of the education system: the teachers.
Recently, the Ministry of Education (MOE), MHESI, and Microsoft Thailand launched the “THAI Academy – AI in Education” project.
This is perhaps one of the most comprehensive overhauls of the traditional school system we have seen. Microsoft is providing over 200 free online courses in the Thai language. These range from basic introductions to highly advanced coding classes.
But the real magic here is how it helps educators. The MOE is integrating smart chatbots and virtual assistants into the National Digital Learning Platform. Imagine a rural school teacher who has to manage a classroom of 40 students with different learning speeds. By using these new tools, the teacher can automatically generate customized lesson plans, grade papers faster, and spend more one-on-one time with the students who are falling behind.
In its first phase alone, this program targets over 600,000 high school students. For older learners, Microsoft’s program offers a “Developer AI Skills Journey.” This acts as a stepping stone for young adults who want to get serious about tech, guiding them toward high-paying, emerging careers like data science and prompt engineering.
Dhanawat Suthumpun, the Managing Director of Microsoft Thailand, put it plainly. He stated that these skills are the bridge that will help Thailand transition its global reputation from a country known for “Made in Thailand” manufacturing to a country celebrated for “Born in Thailand” innovation.
The University Reality Check: Blending Art and Algorithm
The push for new skills is completely changing the college experience. Universities are realizing that teaching tech as a separate subject in a basement computer lab no longer works. The technology has to be woven into every single degree.
At Harbour.Space@UTCC (University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce), the curriculum has been completely rewired. They treat these new tools as a core life skill, much like math or reading.
Students studying digital marketing do not just read textbooks about old ad campaigns. They learn how to use algorithms to analyze consumer data and write advertising copy. Students learn how to build automated bots and launch real tech startups before they even graduate.
Other universities are launching programs that mix communications with technology. They teach students how to use algorithms for content creation, but they place an equal, heavy weight on storytelling, human empathy, and design thinking.
The core message coming out of Thai universities today is that machines should be viewed as an enabler, not a replacement. A computer can process a million rows of data in a second, but it takes a human being to look at that data, figure out why it matters, and tell a compelling story about it.
Technical ability alone is no longer enough to get a good job. You have to be able to translate data into insight, and insight into real-world action.

Technology moves incredibly fast. A course written in 2024 might be completely outdated by 2026. The government and these private companies have to constantly spend money and time rewriting their textbooks and updating their videos. It is a treadmill that never stops.
The Brain Drain
Even as Thailand trains up thousands of brilliant new data scientists and engineers, keeping them in the country is tough. Global tech hubs in Singapore, Europe, and the United States often offer massive salaries that local Thai companies struggle to match. It is easy to look at all these massive government plans and billion-dollar corporate partnerships and think, “What does this have to do with me?”

In the next decade, almost every profession will be touched by artificial intelligence.
