SURAT THANI – Thai authorities have launched a major sweep against illegal educational facilities, resulting in the closure of two unauthorized childcare centers on the popular holiday island of Koh Phangan and a raid on an unlicensed international school in the heart of Bangkok.
The operations, carried out this week, highlight a growing government crackdown on foreign-run businesses operating without legal permits. In both cases, dozens of foreign nationals were detained for working illegally, raising serious concerns for parents about the legitimacy of private educational institutions in Thailand.
Childcare Centers Shut Down on Koh Phangan
On the tourist-heavy island of Koh Phangan, famous for its world-class beaches and monthly parties, local police and immigration officials targeted two separate facilities acting as childcare centers. These centers were found to be operating entirely outside of the Thai regulatory framework, lacking the necessary licenses to care for children or operate as a business.
During the raids, police arrested several individuals involved in the management and daily operations of the centers. The group of suspects includes a mix of nationalities:
- Israeli nationals(acting as owners/operators)
- Thai nationals(working as assistants)
- Myanmar nationals(employed as childcare workers)
Police reports indicate that the centers had been providing services to the children of both foreign expatriates and tourists staying on the island. Officials noted that while the facilities appeared well-kept, they failed to meet the strict safety, sanitary, and legal standards required by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.
All suspects were transferred to the Koh Phangan police station. They face charges of operating an unlicensed business and, in the case of the foreign nationals, working without a valid work permit.
Bangkok School Raid: 10 Foreign Teachers Arrested
As the operation on Koh Phangan unfolded, authorities in Bangkok were busy conducting a similar raid in the Prawet district. Immigration police, acting on a tip-off from concerned neighbors, entered a building that was being marketed as an “international school.”
Upon investigation, officials discovered that the school had been operating for over a year without any legal registration. The facility was teaching more than 100 students at both the kindergarten and primary levels. Despite its professional appearance, the school did not possess a license to operate as an educational institution.
The Breakdown of Arrests in Prawet
The raid led to the arrest of 10 foreign nationals who were found actively teaching or working as administrative staff. According to police, the suspects included nationals from:

- Bangladesh
- Pakistan
- Nigeria
None of the individuals arrested held a valid work permit for teaching. Under Thai law, foreign teachers must possess specific visas and work permits tied to a licensed educational institution to work legally in the country.
A Warning to Parents and Expats
Pol Maj Gen Prasat Khemaprasit, commander of Immigration Division 1, issued a stern warning to parents following the Bangkok raid. He emphasized that enrolling children in unlicensed schools creates significant risks for families.
“If a school is not operating in line with the law or has opened without authorization, it could be ordered to close at any time,” the commander stated. “This directly affects the students’ education, their records, and the financial security of the parents who have paid tuition fees.”
Authorities are urging parents to verify the status of any school or childcare center with the Ministry of Education before enrollment. A legitimate school should be able to provide a physical copy of its operating license and proof that all foreign staff are legally documented.

Thailand has seen a surge in the number of “pop-up” schools and private nurseries, particularly in areas with large foreign populations like Bangkok, Phuket, and Koh Phangan. While many are legitimate, others try to bypass the complex and often expensive licensing process.

The Immigration Bureau has stated that these raids are part of a broader strategy to “clean up” the tourism and education sectors, ensuring that only qualified and legal professionals are working in the country.
