CHIANG RAI— A minor 2.1 earthquake shook parts of Chiang Rai province on Saturday afternoon, causing brief concern among residents during the busy Songkran holiday period. While the tremor was small, officials are asking the public to stay informed as they monitor the situation.
On April 11, 2026, at approximately 3:10 PM, the Earthquake Observation Division reported a seismic event in the Mueang District of Chiang Rai. The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 2.1, occurred at a very shallow depth of just 2 kilometers below the surface.
The epicenter was specifically located in the Doi Lan sub-district. Because the quake was so shallow, people living nearby were able to feel the vibration clearly, despite the relatively low magnitude on the Richter scale.
Local authorities and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) moved quickly to assess the area. Fortunately, the initial reports bring good news for the community:
- No Injuries:There have been no reports of injuries or medical emergencies related to the tremor.
- No Structural Damage:Early inspections of homes, temples, and government buildings in Doi Lan suggest that the infrastructure remains intact.
- Public Awareness:While residents felt the ground shake, there was no widespread panic.
Official Guidance for Residents
The National Disaster Warning Center (NDWC) is continuing to track underground activity in the region. Northern Thailand is known for its active fault lines, and while small quakes are common, officials emphasize the importance of readiness.
“We are monitoring the data around the clock,” a representative stated. “We urge citizens to keep their communication lines open and follow official updates from the DDPM.”
Residents are advised to:
- Stay calm but remain observant of any unusual environmental changes.
- Ensure heavy furniture is secured, as a precaution against future tremors.
- Follow verified news sources to avoid the spread of misinformation on social media.
Chiang Rai is currently hosting many visitors for the Thai New Year celebrations. Local leaders have confirmed that holiday activities are proceeding as planned, but safety remains the top priority. Further updates will be provided if any significant aftershocks or secondary events are detected.
