CHIANG RAI– The Department of Highways has officially opened the new underpass and frontage road at a high-risk section of Highway 1152. The upgrade fixes a long-standing danger point at kilometer 18 and helps make travel safer for residents and passing drivers.
This project is part of the Department of Highways’ plan to improve dangerous spots on major roads. The goal is clear: to reduce repeat accidents and turn risky areas into safer routes for everyone.
Highway 1152 , on the Hua Doi to Ban Don section, is an important link between Highway 1421 ( Chiang Rai to Khun Tan District ) and Highway 1020 (Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong Port). It also serves as a key freight route to Laos through the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge in Chiang Khong. Because of that, traffic has continued to grow year after year.

One of the most dangerous points was between kilometer 18+300 and 19+000 in Don Sila Subdistrict, Wiang Chai District, Chiang Rai. This section used to be an intersection located on a curve, and it sat at a noticeably different level from the main road. As a result, drivers often had poor visibility, and serious accidents happened there many times.
To solve the problem, the Department of Highways, through Chiang Rai Highway District 1, carried out a traffic separation project designed to lower crash risk. The total budget for the work was 24,979,400 baht.

The main improvements include:
- A new underpass for passenger cars and motorcycles, so vehicles can cross safely without cutting across traffic on the main highway
- A one-lane frontage road to separate local community traffic from through traffic on the main route, which helps traffic move more smoothly and lowers accident risk
- A drainage system to prevent flooding inside the underpass and on the road surface
This upgrade is more than a road construction project. It gives the community and all road users a safer route, better access, and more confidence every time they travel through this area.
