BANGKOK— Just days before the 2026 Songkran Festival, a time when millions of Thais typically travel to their hometowns or vacation spots, a sudden spike in fuel prices is casting a long shadow over Songkran, the “World’s Greatest Water Festival.” From the rice fields of Chiang Rai to the streets of Chainat, the rising cost of diesel and gasoline is creating a domino effect that is hitting wallets and dampening the holiday spirit.
While the government has recently scrambled to order a 2-baht-per-liter cut in ex-refinery prices, many citizens say the relief is too little, too late. For many, the festive mood has been replaced by a “cost-of-living crisis” that is changing how the nation celebrates.
In Northern Thailand, the typical Songkran rush is notably absent. Hotel operators in popular destinations like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are reporting a worrying trend: a 50% decline in room reservations compared to last year.
To combat the empty rooms, many hotels have slashed their nightly rates, hoping to attract last-minute travelers. However, experts say the issue isn’t just the price of a room; it’s the cost of getting there.

- Road Trip Woes:With diesel hitting historic highs—crossing 50 baht per liter earlier this month—the classic family road trip is becoming a luxury many can no longer afford.

Egg Prices Hit Record Highs
The ripple effect of fuel costs has landed squarely on the kitchen table. Transporting food across the country has become significantly more expensive, and these costs are being passed directly to the consumer.
In local markets, the price of a tray of 30 large eggs —a staple for Thai families—has jumped from approximately 100 baht to as much as 125–145 baht.
Why are eggs so expensive?

- Farming Overhead:Farmers are paying more for chicken feed and electricity to keep hen houses cool during the April heat.

Farmers Under Pressure in Chiang Rai
While city dwellers worry about holiday travel, farmers in the north are worried about their survival. In Chiang Rai, the “rice bowl” of the region, the soaring price of diesel is driving up the cost of off-season farming .
Rice harvester operators, who rely heavily on diesel to run their heavy machinery, have been forced to raise their rates. Many farmers are now facing a difficult choice: pay the higher harvesting fees and lose their profit margin, or risk letting their crops sit in the fields.
“If the fuel prices don’t stabilize, we are basically working for free this season,” said one harvester operator in Mae Sai. “We need large amounts of fuel just to finish one rai of land. At nearly 40 or 50 baht a liter, the math just doesn’t work anymore.”
The crisis is most visible on the streets of Central Thailand. In Chainat province, a unique and troubling sight has emerged: rows of parked motorcycles. Many motorcycle taxi drivers have simply stopped operating, claiming that the high price of gasoline makes it impossible to earn a living after paying for fuel.
Industry Leaders Call for Action
For these drivers, the daily take-home pay has been cut in half. Even with fare increases, passengers are choosing to walk or stay home rather than pay the higher rates, creating a “lose-lose” situation for the local transport economy.
Business operators across the country are urging the government to move beyond temporary fixes. While the Energy Policy and Planning Office recently ordered refineries to cut prices by sharing excess profits, industry leaders say more structural changes are needed.
What the industry is asking for:
- Excise Tax Cuts:A further reduction in the 6-baht-per-liter diesel excise tax.
- Stabilization Funds:More aggressive use of the Oil Fuel Fund to prevent “price shocks” during peak holidays.
- Biofuel Promotion:Shifting the country faster toward domestically produced B20 and E20 to reduce reliance on expensive imports.
As the Songkran water splashing begins, the hope is that the government’s latest interventions will provide enough relief to keep the economy moving. But for many Thais, the 2026 holiday will be remembered less for the festivals and more for the struggle to keep the tank full.
