How does Facebook determine the quality of Wi-Fi networks available to me?

When you use Find Wi-Fi on Facebook, you can see information about public Wi-Fi networks available to you (example: estimated speed of a network). This information can help you choose the best network available to you based on things like:
Your location
The type of business offering Wi-Fi
Estimated internet speed suited for your needs (example: excellent internet speed for video calling)
To determine the quality of Wi-Fi networks, we aggregate data from people that use Facebook across segments and regions, rather than specific individuals. We look at information such as:
Location
Device information (example: brand and model of iPhone or Android device)
Network connection type and performance (example: download speeds or coverage)
We take the average of data over recent weeks to determine the estimated range of network speeds that would make a network limited, OK, good or excellent. These ranges include:
Limited to OK range for text-based internet
Good to Very Good range for photos and watching videos
Great to Excellent range for video calling, AR/VR and gaming
These estimated ranges are based on aggregate data from other people that use Facebook. These ranges aren’t related to your specific historical internet connection. Your network speed may vary and be impacted by a variety of factors such as the time of day that you connect to a network or the signal strength of your connection based on your proximity to the Wi-Fi router.
