Being Your Authentic Self on Facebook
We understand that changing your name can be a challenging process for transgender, gender non-conforming, genderqueer and non-binary people. You can use your authentic name, the name you go by in everyday life, to update information like your bio, personal account, payment info, and to update your gender identity on Facebook.
Please note that updating your name in some places on Facebook may require you to submit one or more documents with your authentic name
.
Gender identity and personal pronouns aren't required on Facebook, but if you add them to your account, note that:
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
When Facebook contacts you, we'll only refer to you by the name on your Facebook account. This will appear as the name listed in your General Account Settings
.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Pronouns are not an option made available to advertisers in ads tools.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
You can, but aren’t required to, add or update your gender identity in your About settings.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
If you connect your Facebook account to a third-party app or website, the app or website may ask if you want to share your name.
For more information about changing your name and gender on government IDs in a US state, visit the National Center for Transgender Equality.
Verifying your identity
You may be asked to upload documents with your name to start or continue using features like Marketplace or Dating on Facebook. You can upload a government ID or something else from our ID list (example: mail, membership card) that shows your legal or authentic name.

Why Facebook may ask you to upload an ID
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yU/r/SrhEW71pAmO.png)
There are a few reasons you may be asked to send in a copy of your ID to Facebook. Examples include:
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Confirming that the account you're trying to access belongs to you
: Your security is important to us. We ask for an ID so that we don't let anyone into your account except for you.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Confirming your name
: We ask everyone on Facebook to use the name they go by in everyday life. This helps keep you and our community safe from impersonation.
Another reason people may be required to confirm their identity is helping prevent abuse such as scams, phishing and foreign political influence.

After you send us a copy of your ID, it'll be encrypted and stored securely. Your ID won't be visible on your profile, to friends or to other people on Facebook.
To help ensure IDs used for identity confirmation are real, we use both manual review and automated systems. We may also partner with trusted service providers to confirm your identity. This helps detect and prevent risks such as impersonation or ID theft, keeping you and our Facebook community safe.
To help improve our systems for detecting fake IDs and related abuse, we may securely store your ID for up to 1 year. We’ll always let you know at the time if we do this, and you can change this at any time in your Identity Confirmation Settings
.
If you're uploading an ID to get authorized to run ads about social issues, elections or politics, we may store your name, date of birth or ID expiration date for longer than one year. This is for legal reasons and to help keep ads on Facebook safe.
When you capture a photo of your ID, the photo might be stored on your device. For security reasons, it's often better to delete this photo from your device's photo gallery after you've completed the ID upload process.

When you block someone's profile on Facebook, that profile will no longer be able to do things such as tag your profile or see things you post on your profile.
If you have additional Facebook profiles
, you’ll need to manage blocking from each of your profiles separately.
Block a profile
1.
Switch to the profile that you want to use.
2.
Tap
in the top right of Facebook.
3.
Scroll down and tap Settings & privacy
, then tap Settings
.
4.
Scroll down and tap Blocking
under the Audience and visibility
section.
5.
Tap Add to blocked list
and enter the profile's name.
6.
On the search results page, find the profile you want to block and tap Block
.
7.
Tap Block
again to confirm your decision.
Note:
If you can't find a profile using this method, try going to the profile you’d like to block and then selecting Block
from the
menu in the bottom right of the cover photo.

When you block a profile, that profile won't be able to:

See posts from the profile you blocked it from.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Tag the profile you blocked it from in posts, comments or photos.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Invite the profile you blocked it from to events or groups.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Start a conversation with the profile you blocked it from.

Add the profile that you blocked it from as a friend.
Other things to consider when you block a profile
Remember that blocking someone may not prevent all communications or interactions (example: in apps or groups). Learn more about what you can see when you block someone’s profile
.
When you block someone who has more than one profile:
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Blocking one of their profiles only blocks that profile. It doesn’t block their other profiles. This means that you may still interact with their other profiles.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
For example, you may start a conversation with those other profiles or add them as a friend.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
When you block someone's profile, this will limit some of the ways they can interact with you from their other profiles.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Blocking a profile that you’re friends with will unfriend it from your profile. This only applies to the profile you used when you blocked your friend. It doesn’t unfriend or block that profile across your other profiles.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
If you don't want to unfriend a profile but you want to see less of that profile’s posts on Facebook, you can take a break from that profile
.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
The profile you block from will not be able to do things such as:
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Start a conversation with the profile you blocked.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Add the profile you blocked as a friend.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
If you block someone's profile from more than one of your profiles, the person you blocked may be able to figure out that you own all of those profiles
.
Remember that:
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
When you unblock a profile, you won't automatically be friends again.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
If you block a profile and then unblock it, you'll need to send that profile a new friend request.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Profiles won't be notified when you block them.

Additional Tips
The best protection against bullying is to learn how to recognize it and how to stop it. Here are some tips:
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Don’t retaliate.
Most bullies are looking for a reaction, so don't give them one.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Don’t keep it a secret.
Reach out to someone you trust, like a close friend, family member, counselor or teacher, who can give you the help and support you need.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Document and save.
If someone has posted something you don’t like, you can print or take a screenshot of it in case you need to share it with someone you trust later.

We worked with
ConnectSafely.org
on the following answer.
Although videos and other types of posts that mention dares, challenges or nominations don't necessarily go against Facebook's Community Standards
, we know that some people might feel uncomfortable in these difficult situations. If someone ever asks or nominates you on Facebook to do something that you’re not comfortable with, don’t do it.
There are several options for responding to these posts:
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Untag yourself:
If someone nominated you by tagging you in a post, you can untag yourself
.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Remove something posted on your timeline:
If someone posted directly on your timeline, you can remove the post from your timeline
.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Block the person who nominated or challenged you:
You can block the person
who nominated you so they can't tag or message you.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Change your settings to review tags added to your posts:
Turn on tag review
to review tags that other people add to your posts.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Change your settings to review tagged posts on your timeline:

We want to help you find support and take action if you need to. We worked with the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative
and ConnectSafely.org
on this list of things you can do and organizations you can reach out to for support and advice.
Start here
If someone is threatening to share things you want to keep private, asking you to send them money or anything else, you have options:
1.
Document the post: You may need a record of the post if you decide to take further action. Learn how to take a screenshot.
2.
Report this to local law enforcement.
3.
Report this to Facebook.
Sharing or threatening to share intimate images goes against our Community Standards
. If someone is threatening to share things you want to keep private (example: messages, photos, videos), asking you to send money or asking you to do something else you're uncomfortable with, please report this to us.
4.
Block this person
. Depending on your privacy settings, people on Facebook can see a list of your Facebook friends. Once you block someone, they no longer have access to your friend list and won't be able to start conversations with you or see things you post on your profile.
Remember that if somebody asks you to share something you're not comfortable with you have the right to say no.
If you're under 18
If you're under 18, we recommend also talking with a parent or other adult you trust to help you think through what to do. You can also talk to a school counselor or administrator who you feel comfortable with.
What you can do next
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Contact a crisis helpline or chat service. These can be found all over the US and in many other countries. This is a good option if you want to remain anonymous while deciding what to do. Crisis lines can also often refer you to a victim advocate or other legal adviser near you.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Talk with a victim advocate or social worker in your town or city. In the US, there are victim advocates in county offices, police stations, domestic violence prevention centers, rape crisis centers, sheriff's offices and offices of state attorneys general. Victim advocates can help you gather evidence, figure out how to keep you safe and get a civil protection or anti-stalking order against the person threatening you. If you're in the US, call the National Organization for Victim Assistance at 1-800-TRY-NOVA/800-879-6682 or go to www.trynova.org/
.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Contact a legal aid society or organization near you for free advice.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
Ask a lawyer or other counselor for advice.
Where to find additional support
If you, or a friend, are being harassed or harmed online, these organizations should be able to provide support. Many of them offer resources and support specifically for situations when intimate images have been shared without consent. If you're concerned about a friend, please encourage them to reach out directly to the organization as well.
If you or a friend are having thoughts about suicide or self-injury, please contact local emergency services or a suicide helpline
instead.

![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yU/r/SrhEW71pAmO.png)
We worked with
ConnectSafely.org
on the following answer.
First, never agree to anything that makes you uncomfortable. Even if someone seems like a friend, they’re not a friend if they’re trying to get you to do anything against your will or best interests.
It’s hard to make a good decision when you’re upset or confused, so you should be as clear as possible in your own mind about what is and isn’t in your own interests. If you need help with this, talk to someone you trust like a close friend, family member or counselor.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
If you receive any unwanted sexual comments or communication on Facebook, the best thing you can do is remove yourself from the conversation. If it doesn’t stop immediately, you should block the person
and report the abusive content to Facebook
.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
If someone is asking you to share nude or sexually explicit photos of yourself on Facebook, the simplest answer you can give them is, "No. It’s not allowed on Facebook." Sharing nude or sexually explicit photos on Facebook goes against our Community Standards
. You can also read more about what you can do
if this happens.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
If someone is threatening to share things you want to keep private
, like messages or photos, or asking you to send them money or anything else, you should contact local law enforcement, block the person
and report them
.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
If you’re under 18 and someone’s putting pressure on you that’s sex-related, contact local law enforcement or the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children using the CyberTipline at https://report.cybertip.org
or 1-800-843-5678
. They have advisers available 24/7 to help.
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yO/r/mDTpWxQkHlU.png)
If this person is a relative or someone in your household and you need help, contact local law enforcement, go to https://ohl.rainn.org/online
or call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673)
.

Learn more about the Meta Safety Advisory Council
![](https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/rsrc.php/v3/yU/r/SrhEW71pAmO.png)
The Meta Safety Advisory Council is comprised of leading internet safety organizations from around the world. Meta consults with these organizations on issues related to online safety. Council members provide expertise, perspective and insights that inform our approach to safety.
Independence and Scope
Meta’s Safety Advisory Council is made up of independent online safety organizations and experts. Members provide expertise, perspective and insights that inform Meta's approach to safety. They do not act as spokespeople for Meta, and they are not responsible for, or to be held accountable for, review of every policy, product, tool, feature or company announcement. Nor is the Safety Advisory Council designed to examine topics or subjects that fall outside safety (e.g., algorithms, brand trust, artificial intelligence), except if and where there are points of intersection.
Funding
Meta may on occasion provide grants and funding in support of the mission and core objectives of various online safety organizations, including all the members of its Safety Advisory Council. Meta and the receiving expert or organization will be transparent about whether funding has been granted to an expert or organization. Safety Advisory Council members may refuse funding for any reason and it will not impact their membership on the Council.
Non-Disclosure Agreement
On occasion, when seeking the guidance of the Safety Advisory Council, Meta shares confidential information, such as information about future product launches, with the council’s members. Members sign a non-disclosure agreement. The agreement does not constrain the Safety Advisory Council’s members from openly expressing their broader views about Meta, no matter how critical, so long as they do not share confidential information.

Your payment information that was previously saved on Facebook or Instagram is now available in Accounts Center
. This includes any payment methods or shipping info that you may have saved.
Unless you opt to separate your payment information, your payment information will remain synced across your Facebook and Instagram accounts. Please note: If Shop Pay or PayPal is your only payment method saved for Meta Pay, your payment methods will not be synced across accounts.
With your payment information synced across accounts in the same Accounts Center, you can view and manage your payment, shipping, and contact information in one place across apps with Meta Pay.
Please note that when you separate previously synced payment information, that payment information (including payment methods, delivery address, name, email, and payment activity) will still be accessible on the Facebook and Instagram accounts that were previously synced.
While separated, further updates to your payment information on Instagram or Facebook will not sync between each other.
We value the trust you place in us. Learn more about what Meta Pay does with your payment information.
