Screen Readers and Assistive Technology

How do I report a problem with Facebook and the assistive technology I'm using?

If you're experiencing a problem using assistive technology settings like screen readers, magnification tools or alternate input methods with Facebook, use this form to let us know . You may need to log into Facebook to use the form.

Before you report

If you're experiencing issues with Facebook that aren't related to assistive technology, learn how to report a problem with Facebook.

If you’re using a mobile device, make sure the operating system and Facebook app are current . Updating the app and operating system may solve the problem. You can check the versions in the Settings app for your device.

When you report an issue, include information about your device, the assistive technology that you’re using and what you were doing on Facebook when the problem occurred. Including this information helps us recreate the problem.

What to include in your report

Information about your device:

Brand

Model

Operating system

For example, Apple iPhone 12 with iOS 14.5.1 or Google Pixel 5 with Android 11.

Information about the assistive technology or assistive technology setting:

Name

Version number

Feature you're using

Information about what you were doing on Facebook:

Which screen reader should I use for Facebook?

Computer

If you're on a computer running MacOS, try using Apple's built-in screen reader VoiceOver .

If you're using OS X El Capitan and you're not hearing anything when using VoiceOver with Google Chrome, try switching to another browser (example: Safari).

If you're on a Windows computer, try using:

Job Access With Speech (JAWS)

NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA)

Mobile Device

If you're on a mobile phone or tablet, try using:

VoiceOver for iPhone

VoiceOver for iPad

TalkBack for Android

How does adding a mobile number to my account make Facebook more accessible?

Some of our security checkpoints can be difficult to pass using assistive technology. If you add a mobile number to your Facebook account, you'll have another way to verify your account if you need to pass any of these checkpoints. Keep in mind that these checkpoints may require internet access.

How do I turn VoiceOver on or off on Facebook?

VoiceOver is Apple's built-in screen reader.

Turn VoiceOver on or off on your Apple computer

Go to System Preferences .

Click Accessibility .

Select VoiceOver from the left-side menu.

Click to check the box next to Enable VoiceOver . You may need to confirm that you want to turn VoiceOver on.

How does automatic alt text work on Facebook?

Alternative text (alt text) is a text-based description added to an image that can benefit people who are blind and have low-vision. If the person who uploaded or posted the image doesn't include alt text, Facebook’s Automatic Alt Text (AAT) technology uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to automatically create a description of the image. The automatic alt text may not always be complete, but you can edit the alt text for images you upload or post.

To hear the automatic alt text for an image, open Facebook using a screen reader and focus on the image. You’ll hear a description entered by the person who uploaded the image or a list of objects, concepts or locations the image may contain as recognized by Facebook's AAT technology. If you think the alt text of an image violates our Community Standards , you can report the image .

How do I stop videos from playing automatically in my Feed on Facebook?

You can change your video autoplay settings at any time.

To change this setting from your mobile browser:

Classic mobile browser experience

Tap

in the top right of Facebook.

Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy then tap Settings .

Scroll down to Preferences and tap Media.

Scroll down to Autoplay section, then tap to select from the following options:

On Wi-Fi Conections Only : Videos will only autoplay when your device is connected to Wi-Fi with this selection.

Never Autoplay Videos : Videos will never autoplay with this selection.

Updated mobile browser experience

Tap

in the top right of Facebook.

Scroll down and tap Settings .

Scroll down to Media.

Tap Autoplay video , then tap next to Autoplay videos on Wi-Fi to turn it on or off.

Learn how to stop videos from playing automatically on your computer , iPhone or Android device.

You can adjust what video captions look like in your device settings.

Go to your device's home screen.

Tap

Settings .

Tap Accessibility , then tap Subtitles & Captioning .

Tap Style .

Tap to select or create a new style.

If you're using an iOS device, you can adjust your device settings to show captions, when available.

Go to your device's home screen.

Text Size and Contrast

How can I make Facebook appear larger on my screen?

You can use your device's built-in zooming features to make m.facebook.com appear larger.

Android

To zoom in and out of Facebook for Android, use the magnify feature.

Turn magnify on:

Go to your phone's visual accessibility settings.

Tap Magnification Gestures .

Tap to turn on magnification gestures.

Use magnify:

Hide/Show Magnifier: Tap the screen 3 times with 1 finger.

Zoom: Pinch fingers or spread them apart to zoom in or out.

Move Magnifier: Pinch, hold and drag to move the magnifier around the screen.

You may also be able to change zoom settings on Android mobile web browsers.

iOS

Go to your phone or tablet's home screen.

Tap

Settings .

Tap General then tap Accessibility .

Tap Zoom .

Tap next Zoom to turn it on.

Use zoom:

Hide/Show Magnifier: Using 3 fingers, double-tap the screen.

Zoom: Using 3 fingers, double-tap and hold anywhere outside of the magnifier, then swipe up or down to zoom in or out.

Move Magnifier: Tap and hold, and then drag the edge of the magnifier to move it around the screen.

Scroll: Use 3 fingers to scroll what's being magnified.

Adjusting text size won't change how large your posts look to your friends. Learn more about why short text posts may appear larger than any text size preferences you may have set .
