One of my favorite ways to relax is to just paint. (Disclaimer – I’m not a pro.) But without a doubt it is a great way to just sit down and have time to yourself to craft. These Mini Canvas Magnets I made the other day are the perfect craft that just gets your creative juices flowing, your hands mucked up with paint and gives you a chance to just sit and unwind. Plus, they will make a great gift for teachers or friends this Valentine’s Day.  

I didn’t do a tutorial because they’re just too simple. Also because I figured I would do one and then photograph the steps on the next one. But then the next one I messed up so badly that I had to paint over it and start again. 

That’s another great part to painting – you can always paint over it and start again. 

So here’s just a few tips if you want to make your own:

1. You need to buy a pack of Ultra Mini Canvas’ .  These were 2″ X  2″ and were $4.99 at Hobby Lobby.  You will also need small paintbrushes, acrylic paint and self stick small magnets. 

2. If you aren’t a professional painter than it’s easiest to stick to 2 complimentary colors and one base color such as white or black.  Stay with 3 colors and your painting will look professional. 

3. Stick to simple shapes or easy patterns. Find patterns online and freehand them onto the canvas. 

4. Use the small end of the paintbrush dipped in the paint to make polka dots.

5. Blend the colors with the base colors slightly to make different gradients. 

6. Don’t over think it! Part of the charm of these Mini Canvas works of art is knowing that it’s handmade.

7. Have a variety of small paintbrushes and play around with each one. 

8. Don’t leave them on a low counter while drying if you have kids in the house.

9. If you don’t like it just paint over it and go again!! This is a no pressure craft. Just have fun.

10. Stick little (thin) self sticking magnets on the back of each canvas. I used four small square magnets on each corner and they worked great.  You don’t want thick magnets because it will make your canvas stick out too far from the metal object. But you do need a medium strength magnet.

And that’s it! It’s a great project to do and now my kids want me to go buy more so that they can make them as well. I am going to make them again but next time it might involve Washi Tape and Mod Podge. Everything is better with Washi Tape .
