Love Rocks. Literally.

love rocks - simple painted hearts and a great surprise for people to findI know I’ve said this a lot lately but this is one of my favorite projects lately.  It’s fun and it’s a great way to cheer people up that you do not know and might never know the impact that it had.  In my opinion this is the perfect Valentine’s Day craft for kids. Lately it’s been very cloudy and rainy in our area. This past weekend was gorgeous with sun and temperatures in the 70’s but before that we had three weeks of cold wind and gray skies.  Yesterday the clouds and rain returned to a collective groan from our entire town. Honestly I’m tired of being in the house and I’m tired of the clouds.   We needed something fun yesterday that we could do while it rained (again).  But I didn’t want to root around for supplies so it had to be easy and use what we had on hand.  That’s when we decided to paint rocks. Have you tried painting rocks? It’s actually really fun because it’s pretty hard to mess up a rock. And if you do mess up the rock than it’s easy to remove the mistake with a wet q-tip before the paint dries.  The best part is that we decided to make them into cheerful pick-me-ups for the people that want to escape the dreary hold of cloudy skies.  In the spirit of Valentine’s Day we decided to paint and heart on one side and leave a simple message on the other side. painting hearts on rocksAll we did for this project was to run outside and grab a few small rocks out of our landscaping. We washed and dried them and then gathered our acrylic paints and brushes. painting girlsThe kids absolutely loved painting the rocks, I was shocked. They each took about ten minutes just to do one! love hearts on rocks  Here’s a hint to make anything look hard – add dots.  Use the round end of the paint brush, dip it in paint and just dot away. It really does make it look extra special but requires no painting skills. painting hearts on rocks for valentines daylove rocks - paint hearts on one side and a inspirational message on the other and leave in places for people to findWhen they were dry we loaded up in the van and took them to a local park. love rocks - rocks with a heart and hidden message on the back that you can leave in public for people to findWe wrote on the back of all of them a special message. Some said “you rock” while others said “you are loved”. leave rocks with hearts and messages on the back for strangers to findAnd then we simply placed them along paths, on picnic tables, at the base of a sign and on the playground and we left. rocks with hearts painted on them left on a path for others to find for valentines dayWe left the rocks in their spots, hoping to encourage others or maybe just bring a smile to their face.  Honestly we loved it so much that there might be a lot more Love Rocks hidden in our area soon.  Maybe we’ll even take our rock band-of-sisters (I’m so corny I pop) on the road soon.  If you need a fun craft to do with your kids today, maybe give painting a few Love Rocks a try. It’s the perfect Valentine’s Day project.
