Livestream participants are invited to email questions for the speaker to:
MGRquestions@hitchcock.org

Co-Sponsored by the Section of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and
the Department of Medicine
Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth

Session Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the connection between work and health
2. Distinguish the common types of health-related absences from work
3. Identify patients at risk for work disability
4. Explain the provider role in addressing work as a health outcome
5. Use simple work-health strategies to save time and improve patient outcomes

About our presenter:
Dr. Karen Huyck is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Dartmouth in the Section of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Her career plans in marine biology training took an unexpected turn when she completed a medical degree and a doctoral degree in cell and molecular biology at the University of Vermont. She holds a Master in Public Health in Environmental Health and completed a fellowship in Environmental Molecular Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. Before joining the faculty at Dartmouth in 2010, she worked in diverse occupational medicine settings, including as an on-site physician for biotech companies, work disability consultant, impartial medical examiner, and expert witness. Treating countless patients whose lives were shattered by preventable work disability inspired her current work, which expands the traditional scope of occupational medicine to address work as a critical social driver of health for all patients. Most recently, she developed and serves as the Medical Director of Vermont RETAIN, a statewide work disability prevention program. She has won numerous teaching awards and is frequently invited to talk about health inequity related to unemployment and the clinician role in return-to-work. She hopes this talk will help her health care colleagues avoid inadvertently writing prescriptions for unemployment.

Please join the Department of Medicine in welcoming Dr. Karen Huyck for Medicine Grand Rounds.
