2024/25 SeasonThe only ensemble outside of Sardinia dedicated to singing cantu a tenore , Tenores de Aterúe transports you to the heart of the ancient Mediterranean island. Cantu a tenore is characterized by its distinctive guttural singing, intricate overtones and impeccable rhythmic precision.
The New England-based quartet reverse-engineered this Sardinian musical form based on what they knew from studying other polyphonic folk singing. After performing casually, they went viral in Sardinia and were called to the celebrated island. There they were joined by a documentary filmmaker on an ethnomusical adventure that brought them face-to-face with the singers they had long been obsessed with.
Since then the group has continued expanding their repertoire and sharing Sardinian music and culture with North American audiences. They also sing some traditional songs from Sardinia's neighbor, Corsica.
Music Department Residency, Ted LevinDuring their residency, the ensemble will visit classes in the Music Department led by Professor Ted Levin, a long-time Hop collaborator and founder of the Silkroad Ensemble.

Tenores de Aterúe (Avery Book, Gideon Crevoshay, Carl Linich and Doug Paisley) formed in 2007 to study and perform traditional songs from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. The traditional singing form called cantu a tenore was declared by UNESCO a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" (2005). Over the years, the Tenores have been in-demand performers on stages throughout the US, Canada and Sardinia. They have appeared on VPR, New York City's WFMU, BBC Radio and on Sardinia's Radio Barbagia and TCS Television.
