I joined the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Dartmouth in 2016, and before that I had been teaching Spanish in the United States since 2001. My teaching varies from term to term, but I usually teach Spanish 1, Spanish 2, Spanish 3, and Spanish 9. I led the Language Study Abroad program in Barcelona in the Winter 22 term. I also teach an upper-level course, Spanish 53.03 Bilingualism: Cognitive and Sociolinguistic Approaches to Bilingualism in the Spanish-Speaking World, first offered in Spring 21 and again in Spring 24. Ask me anything about our language programs, becoming a drill instructor, or the language requirement.
Learning a language is one of the most transformative paths on which a student can embark. My teaching honors the potential language learning carries to shape each student's intellectual, personal, and professional growth, and recognizes language's power as a tool for social transformation. One of my favorite things about working at Dartmouth is participating directly or in a facilitating role in projects aimed at making connections between language classes and academic, cultural, and community events on and around campus.
My research interest go hand in hand with my teaching and curricular projects. I have written about language advocacy, language ideologies, or the civic value of multilingualism, in publications like The New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, or Inside Higher Ed.
