Course Description

Examine the structure and function of individual neurons and glial cells, the formation of integrative circuits and the comparative organization and evolution of animal nervous systems of increasing complexity from nerve nets to humans.

WHAT ARE THE LEARNING GOALS OF THE COURSE? #1: Students demonstrate understanding of biological inquiry that lead to new scientific knowledge.
#2: Students are able to organize, analyze, and interpret quantitative data and scientific information#3: Students can effectively participate in scientific communication. Students demonstrate an ability to assess biological research literature orally and in writing. Students can place biological research and/or findings into a broader, ethical and inclusive context.
#4: Students display familiarity with the major theories and concepts of modern biology

Student Outcomes

1. You have worked in an inclusive and supportive learning community with students, faculty and staff to learn about the function of nerve cells and nervous systems building on your previous knowledge and experiences.
2. You will be able to describe and explain how the function of nerve cells and their contribution to the overall function of the brain and behavior.
3. You will have learned a variety of procedures and quantitative analytical methods that neurobiologist use including preparation and neuroanatomical analysis of brain tissue, extracellular and intracellular recording methods for the study of the physiology of nerves, nerve cells and neural circuits.
4. You will have learned how neurobiologist communicate new findings within their scientific communities and the general public.
5.You will have gained new knowledge about neurons and nervous systems that will allow you to better understand and discuss publications such as review articles and original research papers.
6.You will be have better understanding of the contributions that studies of neurobiology can make towards are more inclusive and equitable society.
7.You will have gained insight into ethical issues associated with animal and human experimentation in the field of neurobiology.
