Dear Alumni and Friends,
This March officially marks the first year of the Bold & Gold 2027 Strategic Plan implementation. The plan lays out the four goals the university will undertake over the next five years which are focused on Academic Renewal, Exemplary Student Experience, Institutional Equity, and Flourishing University. In support of Academic Renewal, we are making significant progress toward the launch of the School of Business and Leadership (SBL) this fall. The first floor of Harrison Hall is currently under renovation and will serve as the official home base of the SBL. Additionally, we have initiated the search for the dean and several key faculty. New curriculum has been approved by the faculty, and we are also discussing the cocurricular programs that will align with the school. We are also interviewing candidates for the dean of the Creative School (the Creative School will launch in fall 2024). In support of the fourth goal of our strategic plan, Flourishing University, we have been diligently working to reduce spending, find efficiencies and ensure fiscal stewardship of our endowment and tuition dollars. The strategic plan is already starting to bring positive press, prospective student interest and important increases in applications to DePauw. This application season, we have received the largest number of applications to DePauw in our history. While this is tremendous news, the recruitment season is not over and we are working hard to yield the class. Nearly 30% of the incoming students have indicated an interest in business, economics, finance or adjacent fields. This trend is in line with the research we did as part of our strategic planning to understand the academic interests of the generation of students we are now recruiting to DePauw. We also know students are interested in solving the world’s challenges, whether that be issues of environment and sustainability, global health, peace and conflict or many others for which our liberal arts courses provide students with the disciplinary framework and critical thinking skills important for graduating leaders the world needs. We are excited that so many prospective students are interested in the rich educational experiences DePauw offers inside and outside the classroom including our internships, small classes and study abroad opportunities. Everyone on campus is working hard to recruit the next class of Tigers. If you know a great high school student that you are interested in recommending to DePauw, please do so here .

Courageous Conversations and 15th anniversary of the Prindle Institute for Ethics
Janet Prindle Seidler '58 (center) visited campus on March 2, meeting with Hillman Interns, first-year interns and DePauw classes, attending the Couragous Conversations series that examined the ethics of philanthropy and celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics that her gifts endowed at DePauw.
Three DePauw alumni have returned to campus to participate in the spring play, Caridad Svitch's "Iphigenia Crash Land Falls on the Neon Shell That Was Once Her Heart." The play intersects with allied disciplines, such as Classical Studies and Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Svitch re-tells her understanding of the Greek “Iphigenia in Aulis” story from her self-described perspective as being “born in the US of Cuban-Argentine-Spanish-Croatian parents.” Felicia Santiago ’14 (Psychology) returns as Director for this production, having successfully guided DePauw's mounting of José Rivera’s "Brainpeople" in February of 2020. J Diaz ’13 (Music) is a Composer and Sound Designer, serving both of these roles in the production. J is finishing their PhD at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. Studio artist and performer Lukas Felix Schooler ’09 (Studio Art) is returning to campus to play the role of Achilles. All three alumni pursued Theatre as a central part of their artistic life during and after DePauw, and they bring those talents back to share with our community. See the production on campus:

Jeannette Johnson-Licon (JJL), associate dean of student success, and JC Lopez, dean of student success, coordinated the Indiana Latinx Leadership Conference which DePauw hosted on March 4. "Hosting this year’s Latinx conference gave us the opportunity to showcase DePauw to students from more than 11 high schools, four Latino community outreach organizations and 11 other colleges. The overall conference goals are to bring our communities together and create opportunities for conference participants to discuss, unpack and explore the complexity of language, history and identity of folks with Latin American and/or Caribbean heritage living in Indiana," JJL said. Eleven alumni participated as speakers at the conference: Vincent Aguirre '12, Austin Arceo '06, Varinia Arceo '05, Dr. Angela Castaneda '98, Kenneth Cruz '18, Dr. Nic Flores '12, Eduardo Garcia '21, Greisy Genoa '18, Dr. June Javens-Wolfe '04, Marianne Martinez '19 and Cesar Mendoza '22.
Hampton and Esther Boswell Symposium virtual portion open to alumni
Despite a decreasing worldwide mortality trend due to infectious diseases, zoonotic pathogens have been causing more and more outbreaks. The COVID-19 pandemic is the most recent example of an increasing trend that is becoming more accentuated since the beginning of the current century. This trend can be explained by diverse cultural, economic, and biological factors that must be understood to control or attenuate the occurrence and spread of future outbreaks. This symposium describes some of the most important determinants of zoonotic disease outbreaks and the preliminary results of a research project looking at the risk of risk of bidirectional influenza transmission in a hog grower unit using models. Alumni are invited to participate in the virtual portion of the syposium on Thursday, April 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EDT. Presenters: Dr. Max J. Moreno-Madriñán, PhD, MEM, Hampton and Esther Boswell Distinguished University Professorship, Global Health Program, DePauw University and Wendy Beauvais, BVetMed, MSc (VetEpi), PhD, Department of Comparative Pathobiology, College of Veterinary, Purdue University.

First-gen Rector Scholar excels in science and art
Jade Karas is a sophomore in the class of 2025. A Rector Scholar, she is a double major in chemistry and art history and a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She keeps busy outside of classes as an Admissions Ambassador, First-Year Mentor, and a STEM Guide, as well as being involved in DePauw Arts and Crafts Club. “One of my most memorable experiences so far would have to be being part of the First-Year Mentor program. As a first-generation student, I had a little bit of a rough transition my first year. Now, I’m able to help guide new students through that, and it’s been really eye-opening for me. I’m able to share my experiences to help somebody else. As an Admissions Ambassador, I love sharing my love for DePauw with prospective students and getting to show others how much this place can truly make you grow as a human being.”
