Southeast Michigan Stewardship Coalition at Eastern Michigan University shines spotlight on student place-based projects at Community Forum – May 21

Who: A large gathering of more than 400 students, educators, and community members from across southeast Michigan

What: The Southeast Michigan Stewardship Coalition’s (SEMIS Coalition) Annual Community Forum at Eastern Michigan University.  See the attached agenda for an idea of the broad range of projects.

When:  8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21 

Where: Student Center, 900 Oakwood St. in Ypsilanti

Background: Students will have the opportunity to showcase their innovative solutions to social and environmental challenges, demonstrating how they apply science, math, social studies, and other disciplines to real-world issues like climate change and water and air quality during the SEMIS Coalition Annual Community Forum at Eastern Michigan University. This event allows them to educate each other and the public on their impactful projects.

This event will feature presentations on topics such as how climate change is altering Michigan forests, improving air quality in Detroit, and researching adaptations that allow living things to survive on Belle Isle.

The  SEMIS Coalition encourages a place-based approach to education. Through questions and community-based research, it allows students to gain a deeper understanding of their community’s strengths, challenges, and history.
