YPSILANTI – The Eastern Michigan University collegiate chapter of the Women in Aviation (WAI) traveled to Orlando, Florida to attend the 35th Annual Conference. Students participated in the convention to expand their reach as a collegiate chapter, acquire internships, and establish connections with others who share a similar passion for the aviation industry.
According to the WAI website, WAI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the number of women involved in all aspects of aviation and aerospace. WAI began and held its first conference in 1990 and was formally established in 1994 as a nonprofit.
While attending the three-day conference, students participated in leadership workshops, networking, and professional development activities and connected with industry companies such as Delta Airlines, FedEx, Southwest, and UPS, among others.
Dharaben Patel, treasurer for the EMU WAI chapter, is studying Aviation Flight Technology. From an early age, Patel always had the aspiration to become a pilot.
“Through attending the conference, I learned that there is a space for any and everyone in the aviation industry. It was very inspiring to see and hear from so many wonderful ladies doing different things in aviation and hear about their accomplishments,” said Patel.
Elaina Howes, membership chair of EMU WAI, is studying Aviation Management with a concentration in Federal Aviation Administration Dispatch and a minor in Business. While attending the conference, Howes left inspired and ready to inspire other young women interested in aviation.
“Anything is possible when you put your mind to it. It might seem like a lot of information at first but when or if you join clubs or organizations, the ride to success will fill you with even more excitement! Staying passionate and making connections over the years is very important and rewarding in the end,” said Howes.
