Ethiopian Airlines Group has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to acquire the newest Boeing 777-9 aircraft. This agreement encompasses the procurement of eight 777-9 passenger planes initially, with the possibility of acquiring an additional 12 jets in the future.
By choosing the 777X , Ethiopian Airlines becomes the inaugural customer for this aircraft model in Africa, further expanding its modern fleet after placing a significant order in 2023 for 11 787 Dreamliner and 20 737 MAX planes.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew expressed satisfaction in signing the MoU, stating that they are committed to adopting advanced technologies to improve services and customer satisfaction in African aviation. He added that the 777-9 will enhance operational performance, while demonstrating their dedication to environmental sustainability through reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Mr. Tasew expressed gratitude to Boeing for their ongoing partnership and support, and eagerly looks forward to flying the 777-9 across African skies and beyond.
The 777-9 is built upon the foundation of the 777, incorporating cutting-edge technologies from the 787 Dreamliner series. This aircraft boasts brand-new wings made of carbon-fiber composite material, as well as advanced engines. As a result, the 777-9 delivers a remarkable 10% improvement in fuel efficiency and operating expenses compared to other fleet families.
The Ethiopian Airlines will utilize the 777-9 to expand and update its fleet, enhancing its capabilities in passenger and cargo transportation to cater to the increasing demand in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. In line with its Vision 2035, Ethiopian aims to serve over 209 global destinations with a fleet of more than 271 advanced and environmentally-friendly aircraft.
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates a fleet that consists of more than 50% Boeing aircraft, specifically 29 787 Dreamliners, 20 777s, 27 Next-Generation 737s, 15 737 MAX, and 3 767 jets. Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing are actively collaborating to enhance the aerospace industry in Ethiopia. This collaboration includes supporting Ethiopian Airlines’ MRO capabilities, promoting industrial development, enhancing training capabilities at the Ethiopian Aviation University, and fostering STEM education. Additionally, they are working together to equip the Ethiopian Museum of Science with aerospace exhibits.
Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook forecasts Africa’s overall air traffic growth at more than 7% through 2042 ─ the third highest growth rate among global regions and above the global average growth rate of approximately 6%. Providing growth opportunities for airlines and offering enhanced features for passengers, with a range of 13,510 km (7,295 nautical miles) the 777-9enabls flights from Addis Ababa to as far as Seattle in the US.
