FRASER ISLAND, Queensland, Australia – An increase in human interaction with Fraser Island dingoes is predicted for the summer school holidays and park rangers are warning campers to be vigilant.
A park alert issued by the Department of National Parks said summer was an important learning period for juvenile dingoes.
It said juveniles would quickly learn bad habits, including stealing food from campsites, rather than learning natural hunting skills.
“This is a particularly important time for juvenile dingoes to test their strength, learn essential survival skills and to avoid habituation towards people,” the alert said.
It said juveniles learning pack rules would also try to dominate people, particularly children.
Dingo safety tips include staying within arms reach of children at all times, walking in groups, locking up food stores and securing all rubbish, fish and bait.
The safety alert will be in effect until February 2014.
