Despite the fact that the earthquake measured 4.8 in magnitude, it caused enough shaking to warrant the Federal Aviation Administration (FA) issuing a temporary ground stop at Newark International which is located just 40 miles for the quake epicenter.
The earthquake originated near Lebanon, New Jersey, west of New York City. eTN contributor and editor of wines.travel, Dr. Elinor Garely, shared that she felt the quake in NYC and thought her neighbor’s washing machine had gone out of balance.
This also caused the AirTrain service at the airport to cease as the stoppage delayed over 100 departing flights in Newark in addition to 90 more flights being delayed that were headed for the airport.
LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports temporarily were under a ground stop but no flights were affected. The Amtrak train system is inspecting tracks and warned that passengers should expect delays.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) warns to be prepared of potential aftershocks. There were no reports of damage or injuries.
