According to Visit Flanders, 73% of Flemish residents took at least one overnight trip in 2025. Of those respondents, 65% reported at least one foreign excursion, and overseas travel represented 35% of travellers with an overnight stay. The data positions Flanders as an important outbound source market for nearby European destinations.
Participation varied sharply by household and socioeconomic factors. Households with two employed persons recorded the highest participation at 91%, while households with children reached 87%. Households without employed members recorded just 46% participation. Among residents who did not travel in 2025, 37% pointed to financial reasons and 16% cited health issues; 30% said they had no interest, while roughly 10% named work or study commitments and 9% cited family responsibilities.
Lower participation was also observed among singles (50%) and people aged 55 and above (58%). The report links higher participation with education, younger age groups and single-parent families, who travelled more frequently than average.
Visit Flanders highlights demand for short breaks, city and cultural trips, family-friendly and nature-based holidays. The report identifies opportunities for the sector to address affordability and access through affordable packages, flexible payment options, family-focused experiences, accessible products and short-break offerings.
The figures underline that while outbound travel remains strong, income, employment, age and personal circumstances continue to shape who can take holidays.
