The most recent data from the National Travel and Tourism Office ( NTTO ) reveals that the total number of non-U.S. resident international visitors to the United States reached 5,889,335, marking a 5.2% increase from April 2023. This figure also accounted for 83.6% of the pre-COVID total visitor volume recorded in April 2019.
In April 2024, the number of overseas visitors to the United States reached 2,820,940, marking a 9.2% increase from April 2023.
The total non-U.S. resident international arrivals to the United States continued to rise on a year-over-year (YOY) basis for the thirty-seventh consecutive month in April 2024.
April 2024 also saw overseas visitors totaling over 2 million for the fourteenth consecutive month.
Among the top 20 tourist-generating countries to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Spain reported a decrease in visitor volume in April 2024 compared to April 2023, with changes of -7.4%, -0.1%, and -8.1% respectively.
Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and India were the top 5 source markets for international visitor arrivals, accounting for 64.6% of total international arrivals.
International Departures from the United States:
In April 2024, the total number of U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States reached 8,072,519, marking an 8.0% increase from April 2023 and a significant 106.3% increase from the pre-pandemic levels of April 2019.
April 2024 marked the thirty-seventh consecutive month of year-over-year growth in total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States.
The year-to-date market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) stood at 50.8%, while overseas destinations accounted for 49.2%.
Mexico saw the highest outbound visitor volume in April 2024, with 3,105,473 departures, representing 38.5% of the total departures for the month and 41.6% year-to-date. Canada experienced a year-over-year increase of 12.9%.
When combined year-to-date, Mexico (12,938,414) and the Caribbean (3,985,597) made up 54.5% of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
Europe emerged as the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors, with 1,630,759 departures in April 2024, accounting for 20.2% of all departures. Outbound visitation to Europe in April 2024 increased by 4.6% compared to the same period in 2023.
