Advanced Academics Identification and Placement for Current FCPS Students

FCPS offers a continuum of services for elementary students to meet their current academic needs. To learn more about these services, please visit the Elementary AAP page .
Full-Time Referral Deadline: December 15
Parents of students in grades 2-7 may refer for Full-Time AAP placement.
Part-Time and Subject-Specific Advanced Academic Services
All students are evaluated for Part-Time and Subject-Specific services using multiple measures during the spring screening in May. For consideration outside of the screening window , please follow the steps detailed below. All decisions regarding these services are made at the local school.
Step 1
Submit the Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP Services Referral Form to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) at your local elementary school:
Contact your school's Advanced Academics Resource Teacher (AART) for questions regarding student eligibility or placement in school-based services.
Step 2
The AART reviews all pertinent information with the local screening committee.
Step 3
The school notifies you of the eligibility decision within approximately 30 school days.
Eligible
The student begins receiving services immediately after the decision is processed.
Ineligible
The decision may be appealed once per school year by contacting the AART in writing and providing new information about the student.
Full-Time Services
Full-Time Testing and Identification Timeline
All decisions regarding Full-Time placement in Full-Time AAP are made through a central screening committee of educators from across FCPS.
Step 1
By Referral
- Refer student for screening before the deadline .
- Submit the Advanced Academic Programs Full-Time Referral Form to the school. Parents or guardians may refer students in Grades 2-7
Universal Screener
The universal screener referral is created based on scores from FCPS-administered ability tests given. Universal screener referral students are not guaranteed eligibility, but they are automatically referred for screening.
Step 2
Optional– submit additional information to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) at your local elementary school or the Director of Student Services (DSS) at the middle school by the deadline . - Student Work Samples - limit 2 pages
- Achievement Test Scores (SOL Scores Already Included)
- Private Ability Test Results
Step 3
The central screening committee meets according to the timeline .
Step 4
Decision letters are sent according to the timeline .
Attend Full-Time Orientation at the Elementary School.
Step 5
Eligible
Complete the Permission for Placement Form by the deadline .
Ineligible
Parents may refer for part-time services at any time. Parents may refer for Full-Time screening during the next screening cycle.
Parents or guardians may submit an appeal. Directions for appeals are contained in the ineligibility letter and on the Full-Time Appeals page . Appeals may only be from the most recent screening cycle and must contain new information not contained in the original screening file.
