Big Kids, Big Hearts: How Fairview Elementary’s 6th Grade Mentors are Lighting the Way for K-3 Falcons
Walk through the halls of Fairview Elementary during any given school day, and you might witness something truly special: a 6th grader huddled over a math problem with a second grader, or a kindergartener proudly showing their mentor a picture.
This isn’t just a pleasant afternoon break. It’s the Fairview Mentoring Program in action, a vibrant initiative where our 6th grade students are paired with younger students from Kindergarten through 3rd grade.
This program is about fostering a sense of community, responsibility, and friendship that spans all ages in our school. Here’s how it works and why it’s making such a positive impact.
The beauty of this program lies in its consistency. Mentors and their mentees meet on a regular schedule, typically during designated times within the school day such as during specials, recess, or even during a planned "mentoring block."
These sessions are intentionally designed to be flexible and student-driven. They usually begin with a check-in. The 6th grader might ask, “How was your day so far?” or “What did you learn today?” This simple act of asking and listening creates a valuable space for the younger student to reflect on their day and share their experiences with a trusted peer.
The primary goal is to build a genuine relationship. These check-ins are essential. For the K-3 student, it's a chance to feel seen and heard by an older student. For the 6th grader, it's a practice in empathy and active listening.
As one 6th grade mentor shared, "At first, I was worried about helping with the work, but now I look forward to just talking about how our days went. It’s cool to see what they’re excited about."
The Fairview Mentoring Program is a true win-win for our entire community. Our 6th grade Falcons develop leadership skills by learning how to guide, and have patience. In addition, knowing they have someone who looks up to them encourages accountability and a sense of duty. Finally, helping someone else succeed is incredibly empowering and shows the 6th graders the real-world value of the skills they've worked hard to acquire. For the younger mentees, they have a trusted friend in the building who knows their name and genuinely cares about their well-being. They also see firsthand how an older student works, reads, and problem-solves, giving them an example to aspire to.
Beyond the individual benefits, this program is transforming Fairview Elementary into a tighter, more connected community. It bridges the gap between grade levels, fostering relationships that might never form otherwise.
When a first-grader waves to their 6th-grade mentor at recess, it isn't just a wave; it’s a connection. It's a reminder that at Fairview, we are all part of the same team, looking out for one another.
We are incredibly proud of our 6th grade mentors for their dedication, their patience, and their big hearts. They are a true testament to the kind of leaders and compassionate individuals we nurture here at Fairview Elementary.
