Learning Environment in an Online Class
Online courses take as much time as face-to-face courses.
Online courses require 5-7.5 hours per week for learning, studying the material, completing assignments, and attending the live class.
- Honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment courses may require additional time to meet their increased rigor and expectations.
Each week includes:
- asynchronous online lessons,
- a mandatory synchronous class,
- assignments, and
- assessments.
In an online course, you are responsible for learning. You must be diligent and dedicated.
You will spend:
- 80% of your time completing lessons, assignments, and assessments.
- 20% of your time in the weekly synchronous class.
Synchronous online classes are not traditional lectures . Instead, they follow a flipped classroom model, where you first engage with the lesson content on your own during asynchronous time. The live class sessions are then used as interactive, blended-learning environments where your teacher assesses your understanding through activities, discussions, and collaborative work.
The FCPS Online Campus does not offer any self-directed courses . All Online Campus courses have fixed deadlines, daily or weekly assignments, and face-to-face exams.
You must turn on your webcam for use in Zoom for the daily synchronous class.
Student's Role in Online Learning
You are expected to engage weekly in the course content by:
- taking an active approach to your learning,
- scheduling time every day to work in the online course,
- participating actively in the mandatory synchronous class,
- communicating regularly with your teacher.
Teacher's Role in Online Learning
Teachers facilitate learning and support you by:
- serving as mentors and guides,
- creating and maintaining a culturally responsive classroom,
- encouraging diverse and deeper thinking,
- initiating discussions,
- assessing your progress and providing feedback,
- answering your questions,
- informing parents/guardians of your progress.
