Excitement Builds as Families Explore the New Western High School
Prospective students and families explored the new western high school
Prospective students from western Fairfax County and their families enjoyed an in-person look at the new western high school during a lively and well-attended open house on January 11. More than 2,300 individuals (representing about 800 families) registered to attend.
Three one-hour sessions were held, giving families a chance to explore the campus, talk to FCPS staff, and imagine what learning might look like when the school opens for the 2026-27 school year.
Principal Dave Jagels opened each session with a brief introductory presentation, sharing the school’s vision and what families can expect during its inaugural year. His remarks helped set an enthusiastic and welcoming tone for the day.
Excitement around the school’s innovative pathways was palpable. The pathways focus on emerging technologies such as aerospace sciences, artificial intelligence, and advanced technology and innovation. Hands-on experiences will be available in areas such as robotics, drones, aviation, machine learning, and digital fabrication, along with opportunities to earn professional certifications and participate in internships.
Many FCPS staff members were available to answer questions, representing offices including the Chief of Staff; Chief of Schools; Strategy, Planning, and Learning; Communications; Chief of Experience and Engagement; Transportation Services; and Student Athletics and Activities. Staff from the departments of Instructional Services and Human Resources also participated.
In the school's first year, rising 9th and 10th graders living in the Centreville, Chantilly, Oakton, South Lakes, and Westfield pyramids are eligible to opt in to attending the school. Space is available for 500 9th graders and 500 10th graders.
The School Board will vote on the new school’s name on Thursday, February 12.
