Grand Canyon University clarinet instructor Tim Haaswill lead “Mainly Mozart” at the GCU Recording Studio from 7:30-9 p.m. Sept. 19.
Haas, a locally renowned clarinetist, will be accompanied by pianist Mark Feareyand flutist Katrina Kingin performing a night of music by Mozart.
Haas has performed at ClarinetFest three times in the last five years. Clarinet Fest is held as part of the annual International Clarinet Association Conference, scheduled for Dublin, Ireland, in 2024.
This week's event marks a return to Haas’ roots. He hasn’t been afraid to steer away from Bach and Beethoven and has encouraged his students to explore a variety of music. Haas also has invited other musicians so that his students can be exposed to a concert environment.
At the first faculty recital during the fall of 2018, Haas directed “21 st Century Bass Clarinet.” That performance included “The Blues Ranger,” a jazz clarinet piece by John Oxfordstemming from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers kids’ series in the 1990s.
Haas has been an adjunct professor at GCU since 2012, and he’s heavily involved in the music department. He operates the GCU clarinet studio, serves as Director of Recruiting for the GCU Thundering Heard Pep Band and plays the principal clarinet in the Canyon Symphony Orchestra.
For several years, Haas has taken current and former clarinet students to play a series of Christmas songs at Andre House of Hospitality, a shelter that provides meals and clothing to Phoenix’s homeless population.
