Wi-Fi 7: Welcome to the era of multi-gig wireless
Multi-gig has been big news for awhile , but until now multi-gig internet has largely been a wired-only club. Customers could get from 2 to 20 gigabit speeds into the home, but unless you ran an Ethernet cable through your walls, you couldn't actually capitalize on all that speed throughout the entire home.
Now, that’s history. The GFiber Multi-Gig Wi-Fi 7 Router delivers our best Wi-Fi ever— now included with our Home 3 Gig and Edge 8 Gig products at no extra cost.

A multi-gig approach that puts customers first — next in internet starts in Iowa
When GFiber first brought gigabit speed to Kansas City in 2012, we didn’t just offer a faster internet connection; we established a new benchmark for what you should expect from your internet service provider.
Today, we’re doing it again. We’re thrilled to announce that Des Moines is officially our first market where multi-gig internet is the standard, and we’re rolling it out to customers at the same prices we’ve always had (in fact, some customers will be paying less per month!). At the same time, we are also leveling up our highest speed products to Wi-Fi 7, our most powerful Wi-Fi ever. This isn't just about more speed; it’s about continuing to create and add value, not just for the newest customers, but those that have always had GFiber. In fact, many of our existing customers woke up this morning to up to 3x higher speeds for the same price they’ve been paying, without having to do anything (and with just a click of the button on our side).
More speed. Same price.
At GFiber, we take immense pride in knowing our customers love … not like … LOVE their GFiber service . We’re in this relationship for the long haul and we know that to keep love like that going we have to keep investing in our relationship—surprising, delighting, and growing to flex and meet changing needs. So, starting with Des Moines, we’re leveling up our lifestyle products without changing the prices:
-
Core 1 Gig becomes Core 3 Gig ($70/month): 3x the symmetrical speed of our original internet and still the same price since 2012.
-
Home 3 Gig becomes Home 5 Gig ($100/month): Two more gigs of symmetrical speed plus the GFiber Multi-Gig Wi-Fi 7 Router with our best Wi-Fi ever.
-
Edge 8 Gig ($150/month): Multi-gig gets supercharged with the new GFiber Multi-Gig Wi-Fi 7 Router.
Additionally, the debut of these Home 5 Gig and Edge 8 Gig products come with the new GFiber Multi-Gig Wi-Fi 7 Router included so you can take advantage of the smartest traffic handling, best security, and multi-gig speeds even over wireless throughout your home . This isn’t an add-on; it’s GFiber’s new standard with a 10 Gig port plus three additional multi-gig ports, it’s built to handle more devices simultaneously — imagine wired speed and quality without the wires.

More than speed: Building a network for all of life's biggest moments
Game day. For millions of people, it's about the excitement, the big plays, and the drama unfolding on the field (or for most of us, on the screen). For our teams at GFiber, it's a real-world test of everything we've built. The traffic from major live events, like the September 5 NFL game in São Paulo , isn't like a normal day's usage. We anticipated this sudden surge and were ready.

Powering Play in Kansas City
This installment of our Connected by GFiber series features Little Explorers, a children’s play cafe in Kansas City, MO. GFiber’s reliable internet helps provide a connected gathering space for families to explore and unwind.
In the heart of Kansas City, Missouri, Little Explorers is more than just a children’s play cafe; it’s a community hub. For us, reliable internet isn't a luxury—it's the backbone of our mission to create a truly accessible gathering space for families.
The idea for Little Explorers was born out of personal need. Whenever I wanted to take my daughter to do anything fun, we’d have to drive 30 minutes out. I wanted to create something for our kids to do that is on the bus line, is accessible for people that don’t have cars, and is minutes from everything in Kansas City.

Why reliable internet is critical for community-focused fitness: a CrossFit owner's journey
At CrossFit Coordinate, our motto is "where community and fitness intersect." We serve primarily adults in their 30s and 40s, but members range from 12 to 77! These are people who care about their fitness and value being part of something bigger than themselves. We’re not talking about 23-year-old college athletes in peak condition; it’s 45-year-old soccer moms with two kids, professionals hitting 50, and everyone in between.

Our approach is different. We're not in the business of selling memberships. What we're selling is accountability, coaching, and a personalized experience. We provide results through small classes, personal training, nutrition coaching, community activities like ladies' nights, guys' nights, and even a doughnut and beer mile competition! The social aspect is crucial because when your friends are coming to class, it encourages you to show up too. We've built a community of members creating an environment where nobody feels different or out of place.
Here's what you may not have considered about modern fitness facilities: internet connectivity underlies almost everything we do. We offer 24/7 access, which means members can come in whenever they want, but those doors only unlock when our internet-connected system is working. We stream music during every class. Our large computer screen displays workouts that members engage with throughout their sessions.
Our body composition testing machine requires a stable internet connection for results to be immediately shared.
When I acquired CrossFit Coordinate, it was running on DSL service. The reliability was poor, and the cost was high.
Determined to improve our service, I went through considerable effort to get coaxial service installed. The building permissions, the coordination, the setup — it was all a significant undertaking. Initially, I was optimistic. The service cost less than DSL and seemed faster.
But then came the rain.
Every time we had heavy rainfall, our internet connection went down. For a 24/7 gym, this was catastrophic. Picture this: someone wakes up at 4:30 a.m. to work out at 5 a.m., drives to the gym, and discovers they can't get in because the internet is down and the doors won't unlock. They're going to text me, and often I'd have to drive over and manually let them in.
The reliability issues affected our classes too. If coaches couldn't display the workout on screen because the internet was down, how would class participants know what to do? Without music streaming, people were working out without their motivating music.
When I learned that GFiber was available in our area, I didn't hesitate. The difference has been remarkable! Since installing GFiber, we've had virtually zero connectivity issues. The Wi-Fi reaches every part of our 5,000-square-foot facility, without any extenders or additional equipment. Members can connect their devices to stream their own music on our speakers, kids can use iPads while parents work out, and our business operations run seamlessly.

The reliability supports everything from virtual nutrition coaching sessions (we work with clients as far away as California) to our marketing and sales processes. When prospective members visit, they need internet access to view our programs and complete their purchase process. Our social media presence, member management software, and all our digital tools depend on consistent connectivity.
What we don't need is excessive bandwidth; we typically use 400-500 megabits per second, which is more than sufficient for streaming music, basic browsing, and supporting 3-5 concurrent users during peak times. What we absolutely require is reliability.
GFiber has delivered that reliability at a price point lower than what we were paying our previous provider. In fact, when that competitor calls trying to win us back, I tell them point-blank: if their service were free, I would never switch back.
The Bottom Line for Fitness Businesses
For any small business owner, understand that internet connectivity isn't optional anymore. It's foundational infrastructure. Whether you're running 24/7 access, streaming content, managing customer data, or building community through digital engagement, your internet service must be reliable.

At CrossFit Coordinate, we've proven that with the right community focus and reliable infrastructure, you can build something special. We have more than 100 five-star Google reviews and countless success stories through our combined fitness and nutrition programs.
If you're in the Cary and Apex, NC area and looking for a fitness community that will hold you accountable and deliver results, we'd love to have you visit. And if you're a fellow gym owner struggling with internet reliability, consider making the switch to GFiber. Your members and your business will thank you.

How GFiber powers small business success at Office Ours
When reliability meets affordability, small businesses thrive
An unexpected crisis struck Office Ours just three days after opening their Garner location. The co-working provider's internet went down for 36 hours, leaving their new tenants stranded without connectivity.
"Here we are, a day into the outage, and we still can't get anyone from our internet provider to tell us when it'll be fixed," recalls Ryan Rangel, Office Ours founder and president. "We had maybe 10 people who had just moved in and were paying us rent to provide them a good office environment. I called continuously for all 36 hours and for the whole outage no one could tell me when it would come back online."
That moment made it clear: for small business owners, internet connectivity isn't just a service, it's the lifeline that keeps operations running smoothly. That lifeline needed to be stronger than ever to support 150+ businesses – ranging from massage therapists to counselors to IT startups – across four Raleigh-area locations and one in nearby Sanford, North Carolina.

Florals and Fast Internet : A Nashville Love Story

A new kind of internet experience is taking shape at GFiber Labs
At GFiber, we’re determined to stay ahead of what’s next, especially when it has the potential to make our customers’ experience better. This year, we rolled out new lifestyle-based internet products to customers across the vast majority of our cities. And last week, we successfully demoed a new capability with Nokia that pushes the boundaries of possibility for the customer experience: network slicing.
So what is network slicing?
TLDR: it gives us the ability to carve up a customer’s home network into different “lanes,” each optimized for a specific use.
In our GFiber Labs demo, we used gaming as the test scenario. We ran two gaming consoles next to each other and injected congestion into the network with the lab’s traffic generator. Predictably, things fell apart: lag, stuttering, pixelation.* Then we carved out a dedicated lane (a “slice”) in the network that reserved bandwidth just for gaming traffic. The result: the driving game demo went from jittery and glitchy to smooth and responsive.
This was a foundational test. And it worked.
In the long-term, this could truly change how home internet works, especially when it’s driven by the customer. Today’s one-size-fits-all connections treat all traffic the same. But we know not everyone uses the internet the same way: gamers care about latency, remote workers need video stability, home businesses rely on solid uptime and security, and, we can see a future where applications (AI, VR, etc.) may require next-level performance. Network slicing could be how we level up network performance.
Network slicing opens the door to something new: the ability for customers to tailor their connection to the categories of Internet use that matter most in their home. It’s not about prioritizing traffic behind the scenes, it’s about giving you more control, more flexibility, and more ways to get the performance you need, when you need it. And with GFiber, it will always be in service of giving customers more control, without compromising our commitment to an open, unrestricted internet.
There’s also potential for something called “transactional slices.” These would spin up automatically, just for a few seconds, to keep things like financial logins secure. For example, connecting you directly to a service like your bank without routing traffic across the broader internet. You wouldn’t even notice it happening, but it could add meaningful peace of mind.
Network slicing is the next logical step in how we think about GFiber service — especially our lifestyle products like Core, Home, and Edge , built to meet the needs of customers’ unique internet lifestyles. Those products are designed to better match the way people live and work. Network slicing takes that a step further: adding real-time customization and control at the network level.
While we’re very excited about the possibilities here, there are few things that have to happen before we roll out network slicing across our network. Automation is a key piece of the puzzle. We’ll be diving deeper with Nokia later this year to explore how we can bring some of these ideas to life. This kind of innovation is exactly what GFiber Labs was built for and we’re excited about potentially leveling up the GFiber customer experience — again.
Stay tuned.

New products tailored for how you live online
UPDATE: As of May 9, GFiber’s new lifestyle products are now available in Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Colorado, as well as Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Alabama, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
GFiber started on the premise that symmetrical 1 Gig at an accessible price is a necessity. As the internet has become ever more central to our lives — in how we work and learn, how we buy and sell not just goods but ideas, how we connect with our family, our friends, our communities, and our world — and bandwidth demands have continued to grow, this has proven ever more true. And how we offer internet needs to evolve to meet customers where they are online. Because one thing is always true at GFiber — we’re working to build the internet we all want, and as the internet changes, our products will keep up. We are looking beyond speed and price to build the products that make sense for our customers.

GFiber Labs: Exploring the path to 100 Gig
A year ago, GFiber Labs announced 20 Gig + Wi-Fi 7 at Network X in Paris, and just this summer, we went a step further, testing 50 Gig on our network in Kansas City . As 2024 Network X gets underway, we’re excited to continue our work towards 100 Gig with the publication of a white paper with Ciena on Optimizing Passive Optical Networks with Coherent Innovation . I’d like to say a special thank you to the peer reviewers, as always these types of projects are always a true collaboration and exemplify the kind of work we do at GFiber Labs.
This paper explores how 100G CPON could potentially future-proof fiber networks with consideration of growing demands for bandwidth and service, discussing the requirements and opportunities to make this technology a reality and to get it widely deployed. GFiber is committed to ensuring that our network anticipates consumer needs and is ready to support increased demand in advance. Understanding and exploring advanced PON technologies is a key piece of delivering on that promise.
The future of the internet is wildly exciting. GFiber Labs will continue to further the conversation and innovation around what’s next for internet and how we can bring these opportunities to life to make the internet better for everyone.

GFiber Labs: Tomorrow’s internet today
When we launched GFiber Labs last fall , we asked some big questions designed to help us meet the audacious goal of figuring out what’s possible for the internet and what tomorrow’s internet experience should be. While we don’t have all the answers, one certainty is that tomorrow’s internet will need to be faster. Which is why GFiber Labs is on a journey to push speeds to 100 Gig and beyond. Delivering 20 Gig symmetrical speeds was the first stop in pursuing that goal, but journeys are made by next steps. And we recently took that step in our hometown of Kansas City.
For the first time ever, GFiber Labs, using Nokia’s technology, tested 50 Gig on a live network. We put Nokia’s 50G PON technology to the test in one of our KC fiber huts (where we house our network equipment):
GFiber’s philosophy when it comes to our network is that all our customers should have access to the latest technology — whether they’re in the first neighborhood we served in Kansas City or in our newest construction areas in our most recently launched city of Omaha and everywhere in between. That’s why we’ve upgraded our network holistically to XGS-PON wherever possible, enabling 8 Gig speeds and above in all our cities. We are already seeing high interest in our multigig products. And it’s why we’re now working to deploy Nokia 25G PON in all of our markets by the end of the year, so that we can extend access to GFiber Lab’s 20 Gig plan. We already have customers putting this new level of service to the test in North Carolina’s Triangle, and we’re adding new customers to the early access program in select markets.
So when we start testing new technologies, like 50G PON, you know that it’s more than just an experiment or fun stunt for our engineers to geek out over (although, believe me, we did that too!). GFiber sees a future where the internet must meet the demands of increasing users, devices, and bandwidth hungry applications, including immersive video streaming, virtual and augmented reality experiences, artificial intelligence integration into everyday life, and quantum computing. Multigig is already the new norm. But to meet the challenge of this connected future, we are preparing to further densify our network so when bandwidth needs inevitably multiply, we’ll be ready. We are building a state-of-the-art network and we always want to stay ahead of demand when it comes to our infrastructure. 50G PON has the advantage of co-existing with XGS-PON and 25G PON to make the technology transition easier, which may make it the solution for the future.
These technologies don’t just mean we can deliver benchmark speeds to the home, they ensure our network is reliable and can meet fluctuations in demand. . .say when a certain hometown team goes to that big game in February, EVERY February. GFiber Labs is working to make sure that customers get the experience they deserve at every point of their service — the fastest speeds to the home, using the latest Wi-Fi technology to take advantage of those speed inside and even outside the home, and making sure all of that is supported by a network that fixes problems before they even occur.
A customer experience that changes the way we think about internet - that’s what GFiber has always strived to deliver, and as internet needs evolve, we aim to continue to meet that challenge for our customers. Testing 50 Gig brings us one step closer to tomorrow. The journey continues.
