To dictate text with your voice, use the advanced voice typing features on Gboard:
- Punctuation is automatically added as you speak.
- Insert emoji with your voice.
- To edit text, use voice commands such as “delete” or “clear.”
- Type even if the mic is still on.
What you need
To use advanced voice typing features, you must have Pixel 6 or up, which includes Fold or Tablet.
Turn advanced features on or off
- On your phone or tablet, open any app that you can type with, like Messages or Gmail.
- Tap where you can enter text.
- At the top of the keyboard, tap Settings Voice typing.
- Turn Advanced voice typing featureson or off.
Tip:Based on words you've corrected in Gboard, advanced voice typing feature improves just for you. You can change your voice typing personalization at any time .
Use voice commands
Important:You can turn advanced voice typing features off at any time.
- To activate advanced voice typing features, open any app that you can type with and tap on the Keyboard mic.
- To keep the microphone on and send multiple messages in a row:Double tap Keyboard mic.
- To turn the microphone off:Tap Keyboard mic, close the keyboard, or say "Stop."
- Say the text you want to type. If your microphone is still on, the microphone icon continues to glow.
- Say a command. For example:
- To delete the last word:Say "Delete last word."
- To delete the last sentence:Say "Clear."
- To clear the text:Say "Clear all."
- To send a message:Say "Send."
- To fill out the next open field in a form:Say "Next."
- To add an emoji:Say the name of the emoji, like "Smiley emoji."
- To stop voice typing: Say "Stop."
Use Fix it
Important:If you’re using "Fix it" for the first time, in the pop-up, tap Continue. You can use "Fix it" on most apps.

You can check and correct any typed, pasted, or voice dictated text in your text box for writing errors like typos, grammar, and punctuation.
- On your device, open the app where you'll input your text.
- Tap on the Keyboard mic.
- Say the text that you want to type.
- To apply corrections to your text, say “Fix it” or tap on the suggestion that's shown when an error is detected.
- If more proofreading suggestions are available, say or tap More fixesto see additional suggestions.
- “More fixes” is shown after you say or tap Fix it.
- Optional: To remove the correction, say or tap Undo.
Use voice commands for detailed edits
Important:This is only available in:
- Pixel 8 and later devices
- English (US)
You can edit dictated text with voice commands with detailed edits. You can insert, delete, and replace words and punctuation marks without the use of a keyboard.
- On your device, open the app where you'll input your text.
- Tap the Keyboard mic.
- Dictate your message.
- To edit your message through voice command, try saying these commands or similar commands after a brief pause (at least half a second), while ensuring that the cursor isn't located too far (more than one or two sentences) away from the words you want to edit:
- Insert:“Insert _____ before____ ” or “Insert _____ at the end.”
- “I have invited Emily, Jessica, and Jenny to dinner. (Pause) Insert Anna after Emily.”
- Delete:“Delete _____.”
- “I went to the new house near the nearby park today. (Pause) Delete nearby.”
- Replace:“Change _____ to _____.”
- “Buy some apples at the store. (Pause) Change apples to oranges.”
- Spell:“Spell ___ as ___.”
- “Spell Christine as C-H-R-I-S-T-Y-N-E.”
- Capitalize or lower case:“Capitalize _____.”
- “Hi coach Jay. (Pause) Capitalize coach.”
- Insert:“Insert _____ before____ ” or “Insert _____ at the end.”
- After you say a command, your text will be updated based on the command. Sometimes you may see an “Apply” button; you can tap it to apply the command.
- After edits are applied, if you want to:
- Revert the command, say “Undo.”
- Delete the entire message, say “Clear all.”
Tip:
When you use detailed edits, both your voice command transcript and the full text from the input field are sent to Google servers to process your request. No audio data is sent. No text or audio data is stored on Google servers.
Use voice command with writing tools
Important:This is available in Pixel 9 (excluding 9a) and later devices only.
You can compose and rewrite text without the need to touch the screen with voice commands for writing tools. Learn more about writing tools .
- To compose your message through voice, at the top of your keyboard, tap Microphone.
- To provide suggestions, try these voice commands or other similar commands:
- Proofread:“Proofread this” or “Fix this.”
- Rephrase:“Rephrase the message” or “Make my message clearer.”
- Professional:“Formalize the text” or “Make my email more formal.”
- Friendly:“Make my text more casual.”
- Emojify:“Emojify it.”
- Elaborate:“Lengthen my message” or “Make my email longer.”
- Shorten:“Shorten my text” or “Make it concise.”
- To use the suggestion, say "Use this."
- To swipe and check other suggestions, say “Next” or “Previous.”
Tips:
- All proofreading and rewriting of text via voice happens on the device, which ensures your data remain private.
- Voice command for writing tools is supported in six languages: English, French, German (coming soon), Italian, Japanese, and Spanish.
Use multiple languages with advanced voice typing
If you use multiple languages on Pixel 6+, voice typing automatically detects your spoken language seamlessly.
- Automatic language detection is turned on by default.
- To turn it off, go to Settings Voice typing Auto-switch language.
- In the “language tag,” you can find the language detected as you speak.
- To manually switch languages, switch to the relevant language keyboard.
- Turn on Advanced voice typing features. Learn how to turn on advanced voice typing features .
- To switch languages, on your keyboard, tap Globe. Learn how to add a language to your keyboard .
- Tap Keyboard mic.
Tips:
- English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish are supported by the advanced voice typing feature.
- For supported locales, voice typing is on by default, and you can switch between languages automatically. The language you’re speaking will be detected by voice typing.
Correct a misheard word
- If voice typing misheard a word, tap the word to select it.
- To correct a misheard word, you can:
- Speak
- Type
- Spell out a correction
- Tap one of the suggested alternatives
Turn off automated punctuation
- On your phone or tablet, open any app that you can type with, like Messages or Gmail.
- Tap where you can enter text.
- At the top of the keyboard, tap Settings Voice typing.
- Turn off Auto punctuation.
Manage voice typing personalization
- On your phone or tablet, open any app that you can type with, like Messages or Gmail.
- Tap where you can enter text.
- At the top of the keyboard, tap Settings Privacy.
- Under "Improve Gboard & voice typing," turn Personalize for youon or off.
- When turned on, transcripts of what you say and type will be saved on this device. You can delete them at any time on your keyboard when you tap Settings Privacy Delete learned words & data.
Fix issues with advanced voice typing on Gboard
- Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Restart your phone.
- Charge your phone overnight.
Turn on & connect
- Open your device's Settings app.
- Tap Network & internet Internet.
- Tap a listed network. Networks that require a password have a lock icon.

Switch languages on Gboard
- On your Android phone or tablet, open any app that you can type with, like Gmail or Keep.
- Tap where you can enter text.
- Touch and hold the space bar to switch languages.
Switch languages on your device
- On your Android device, tap Settings.
- Tap System Languages & input Languages.
- If you can’t find "System," then under "Personal," tap Languages & input Languages.
- Tap Add a languageand choose the language that you want to use.
- Drag your language to the top of the list.
