You can use Gemini in Gmail to summarize long email threads and messages with several replies.
Availability
- To summarize email threads with Gemini in Gmail, you need an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan. Learn about Gemini features and plans .

Learn how email thread summaries with Gemini in Gmail work
- To keep the summary up to date, Gemini in Gmail synthesizes all key points from the thread and any replies.
- You can expand or minimize the summary card.
- When you minimize the summary card, it remains collapsed above the thread until you expand it.
- If you don’t have a summary card:
- At the top of the thread, select Summarize this email.
- At the top right of Gmail, select Ask Gemini
and request a summary of the thread.
- In the Gmail app for Android and iPhone or iPad, the summary card can contain action buttons for items mentioned in the thread, like:
- A link to visit a website
- A reminder for an event

Important:By default, Google Workspace smart features are off in:
- The European Economic Area
- Japan
- Switzerland
- United Kingdom
- On your computer, go to Gmail .
- At the top right, click Settings
See all settings.
- Under the “General” tab, scroll to “Google Workspace smart features.”
- Click Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Turn on Smart features in Google Workspace.
- Click Save.
Tips:
- To hide the summary card, turn off Smart features in Google Workspace. This also turns off other Gemini in Workspace features, like the Gemini in Gmail side panel. Learn about Google Workspace smart features .
