Full-face portrait paintings placed on Egyptian
mummies of the Roman period (2nd and 3rd centuries AD), most coming from Fayum; usually in encaustic paint
on panel.
The early works by Fayum
masters were painted in encaustic. The portrait of an elderly man (1st cent. AD) shows great physical authenticity, plastic moulding of the face, and natural colors.
