Berlin "Green Head"

Artist unknown Late Period, c. 400 BCE

Neues Museum, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin
Berlin, Germany

This head of a bald man, commonly called the ‘green head’ for the colour of the stone, ranks among the masterpieces of the Berlin collection. Distinguishing features include the fine modelling of the face and the precise accentuation of the features, which make the material hardly recognizable as stone. Instead this sculpture of a person marked by the trials of life almost appears alive, even though the signs of age must be interpreted as idealized, not realistic. The date of the head remains the subject of controversy, and ranges from the 7th to the 1st c. BCE.
