In Brazil , her, her parents and her 11 siblings were warmly welcomed and cared for. Her father, however, did not adapt: he was an intellectual who greatly appreciated music. For some time he worked as a clientelchik (peddler), however it was her mother who supported the family financially. Already at a very young age Berta worked as a saleswoman in a women's clothing shop.
