So-called " Brazilian fans" were popular in North America during the second half of the 19th and early 20th century. The name is misleading and refers to the (sometimes tropical) birds attached to them. The fans were produced by Native groups of the Northeastern Woodlands. The handle is made of birchbark and decorated with porcupine quillwork. Three little birds sit on a bed of down feathers.
