Buckle

Between 475 and 600 BCE

Tallinn City Museum
Tallinn, Estonia

This sumptuous silver -plated bronze buckle has most likely embellished a sword belt. It is decorated with a four-legged human-headed creature (possibly a dragon). Typologically it represents the Salin's Style I, dated to around 475 to 600 AD. It originates from Scandinavia and most likely reached Estonia as a result of contacts between nobles. The buckle was found during excavations in 1975 at Proosa mound in Jõelähtme parish near Tallinn .
