John Fery is best known for the large works he painted to promote the Great Northern Railway. This later painting shows cliffs along the Columbia River , several miles upstream from The Dalles , Oregon. Mount Hood appears in the distance. A title, “Columbia River,” appears below the artist’s signature in the lower left-hand corner of the painting. A label on the back gives the title as “Palisades of the Columbia River.”
