Crucifix made of glass and gilded silver produced by Åke Åkesson (active 1826-1862), Simrishamn, Skåne. The Swedish word for this type of crucifix, striglakors, refers to the parts of it pointing in different directions.

More Information: Magnificent jewellery and clothing were worn at festivals and weddings, and showed the status of peasant women from Skåne in southern Sweden. Silver was an important investment. In Skåne, trade with northern German cities flourished during the 16th and 17th centuries. Both the bourgeois and peasants could afford jewellery, made by German and Swedish goldsmiths. Crosses were usually worn by peasant women. Over time they grew larger, with more pendants and other ornamentation.
