Fan

Unknown circa 1880 - circa 1910

The Frick Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh, United States

This dazzling fan of lace , sequins and mother-of-pearl would have been an eye-catching accessory for an evening out. Although the 18th century was the heyday of the fan, their use continued into the 19th century, when publications like "The Language of the Fan," encouraged the idea that fans could be used for non-verbal flirtation. A fan intensified every gesture, and could entice or discourage suitors. Folding fans were available at all price points, from expensive one-of-a-kind masterpieces to inexpensive paper ones.
