The hall is dominated by a statue of George Stephenson, now on display in the National Railway Museum.

George Stephenson was a prominent engineer in the early days of the railways. He engineered the Stockton to Darlington Railway, the first passenger railway, and worked with his son, Robert, on pioneering locomotive designs.

George Stephenson also helped to engineer railways such as the Manchester and Leeds Railway and the North Midland Railway.
