Lillian Gish was a well-known stage and screen actress whose film career spanned 75 years. Gish gained fame with her first leading role in The Birth of a Nation (1915), and received praise and awards for her last film role in The Whales of August (1987). Her acting work in the silent film era earned her the nickname “The First Lady of American Cinema.”
