Mollett’s paintings often emerge from close observation of natural forms and their transformations. Lip was inspired by a dried riverbed with a single remaining pool of water, where mirrored reflections fractured into shard-like patterns, evoking both geological time and shifting perception. Through layered transparent colors and comb-like textures, Mollett creates a fluid space that unsettles orientation, inviting viewers to linger and “turn over” each mark. The luminous red punctuating the surface suggests forces extending beyond the frame, while the title—drawn from the phrase “stony lips”—infuses the work with an anthropomorphic presence. At once liquid and fractured, Lip reflects Mollett’s ongoing interest in painting as a site of disorientation, intensity, and renewal.
