Sisley returned again and again to the river Loing, which often flooded during the winter. The mill on the right is built on a fourteenth-century bridge. Sisley chose a perspective that leaves out this picturesque motif. The winter atmosphere is conveyed in pale colors by the leafless trees and snow, the pale blue of the river, and the diffuse light of the sky.
